1990MS-33Boulder CO.: Westview Press 1990. Scholarly text explores the failure of liberal nationalism in Iran and examines the movement's three major opportunities and subsequent failures to gain political power in Iran- the latest during the 1977-1979 revolution. The author addresses the key question of whether the failure of liberal nationalism can be blamed o structural constraints or is the result of the movement's own internal dynamics that a complex interplay between these elements against the backdrop of global power politics defeated the movement in Iran. Includes an assessment of future prospects for a secular-liberal-nationalist movement in post-revolutionary Iran. 214 pp. Publisher's stamp on half-title page. First Edition. Soft Cover. 1997MS-44Boulder CO.: Westview Press 1997. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990 the sight of tens of thousands of non-Kuwaiti Arabs Indians East Asians and Westerners fleeing or trapped under occupation made the outside world suddenly aware of a singular fact of Kuwaiti societythat Kuwaitis are an absolute minority in their own country. Basing her analysis on extensive fieldwork and archival research the author examines the social dimension of labor migration to Kuwait since independence in 1961 exploring how the presence of over one million foreign workers has influenced the way Kuwaitis organize their lives and perceive themselves. In particular Longva looks at the relations between two sharply differentiated social categories and the politics of exclusion that have allowed Kuwaitis to protect their rights and privileges as citizens against infringement by the huge influx of expatriates. Longva examines the little-studied system of kafala or sponsorship under which all foreign workers enter and reside in the country showing how it has become the most critical source of power for native Kuwaitis vis-à-vis immigrants. She also addresses aspects of ethnicity and class describes the life of expatriates and looks at developments in gender relations and the role of women in building the national identity in the context of migration and modernization. 266 pgs. Schumacher was the first explorer to survey the regions described here and his minute and thorough scientific observations notes maps drawings and sketches were prepared for publication at the request of the Palestine Exploration Fund by his friend the explorer Guy le Strange. They were published here for the first time. Gottlieb Schumacher 1857 settled at a very young age with his family in Haifa where his father a member of the "Temple Association" designed most of the buildings of the German Colony. Following the completion of his engineering studies in Stuttgart he returned to Haifa and was appointed Chief Engineer for the Province of Akko. He designed many buildings and was a leading figure in civil engineering. One of his most important projects was the survey of the Golan Hauran and the Ajlun districts in preparation for the construction of the Damascus-Haifa railway. In the course of this survey he produced the first accurate maps of these regions along with detailed descriptions of the archaeological remains and the present villages. He published many other reports and books on his discoveries supported by the Palestine Exploration Fund. With the outbreak of World War I the Templar community left for Germany. Schumacher returned in 1924 to his home on the Carmel where he died a year later. Although he was born in Ohio U.S.A. Gottlieb was brought-up and educated as a German. "I beg to through myself on the indulgence of my readers for the defects of style" he once wrote "for my work has been perforce written in a language which though familiar to me is not my own." He built up his wealth as a money changer a trader in textiles precious stones opium carpets agricultural products and staple foodstuffs amongst other goods and judicious transactions in land. Adept at cultivating powerful connections he became the principal supplier of luxury goods to the Shah his court and members of the ruling elite; served as private banker to the Shah his prime minister and influential bureaucrats; and became Master of the Mint. He had agents in all the main towns of Persia and Europe with correspondents in Asia and America.Amin al-Zarb was also an entrepreneur industrialist and innovator. Determined to bring to Iran the advances he had witnessed in Europe he invested in mining established factories with imported machinery such as glass china and silk reeling built a railway line and urged the Shah to establish a national bank. He also became an advocate of reform and curbs on arbitrary rule. He befriended the famous Islamic reformer Jamal al-Din Afghani. An innovator in business Amin al-Zarb led a very traditional life at home. Gifted at making money he was nevertheless a pious man who contributed generously to religious and charitable causes.
