1947183797London: The Fortythree Publishing Co. Ltd Citadel Press Ltd 1947-48. First editions each stamped and dated by the Library of the Jewish American Committee. Number 9 April leads with a story about the bombing of Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem and the connection between British fascists and the Arab Legion. It also features an illustration of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem meeting with Hitler in 1941. On 22 February 1948 three trucks and an armoured car exploded on Ben Yehuda Street killing up to 58 civilians and injuring up to 200 more. The attack was performed by Arab militants and British deserters although Abd al-Qadir claimed responsibility later that day in a leaflet. According to the article in this collection two months later further letters were mailed to MPs in the UK claiming that the attack was orchestrated by a Palestinian branch of the fascist British League at that time a part of Oswald Mosley's Union Movement. The article questions the veracity of the letters but nonetheless condemns the actions of British deserters in Palestine and the Arab Legion's acceptance of former Nazis. Other articles in this collection focus on exposing Mosley's work as well as reporting on antifascist activities South Africa's movement towards apartheid and local legislation. On Guard was published by the Jewish anti-fascist "43 Group". The paper "assumed a moderate non-sectarian identity which was both educative and campaigning. The function of On Guard was to raise anti-fascist conciousness and unite all sections of the public against the menace of fascism" Copsey p. 92 4 broadsheet newspapers bifolium leaf size 430 x 570 mm black letterpress on all pages half-tone photographic illustrations throughout. 1920ABC_48727Iraq 1920. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. With 11 snapshots all ca. 6 x 9 cm. Collection of 11 snapshots from the early 1920s likely taken by a British soldier stationed in the Middle East. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where these photographs were taken but presumably in Mesopotamia present day Iraq. Great Britain was actively involved in Mesopotamia from 1914-1932. Prior to the First World War a large portion of the Middle East was in the hands of the Ottoman Empire. However when the Ottomans sided with Germany in 1914 Great Britain sent forces to Mesopotamia to protect the Anglo-Persian oil fields. The British army initially suffered a major defeat but eventually gained the upper hand and captured Baghdad in 1917. In 1920 after the Ottoman Empire was partitioned the United Kingdom formally established control in the region under a mandate of the League of Nations. However the Iraqi people resented this idea and revolted. In 1922 Great Britain and Iraq then signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in which Iraq was given the right for self-government while Great Britain stayed in control of the country's foreign policy. This would last until Iraq's independence in 1932.The present snapshots were taken in the early days of British control in the region and depict the atmosphere at the time. They show the daily life of locals including women collecting water from the river men standing guard and the hustle and bustle in the streets. Also included are various group photos of British soldiers and locals. The photographs show some traces of wear around the corners and edges but are overall in good condition. unknown
1941174371Palestine Egypt and Sudan: 1941-43. With camels and camera in the desert theatre A visual record of the Second World War in the Middle East with superb snapshots of Indian Army personnel members of the camel corps in Egypt and Sudan and the Sudanese household cavalry. Also included is a range of scenic views and images of everyday life. Warner's squadron served in the Middle East 1941-2 and was posted to North Africa in 1943. His most important photographs concern his service and those with whom he served. Alongside photographing military personnel he records their training and excursions and in one image a group of RAF men Warner perhaps among them pose on top of a car belonging to the Palestine Police Force. Eight photographs show the funeral of a British sergeant while one commercial image pictures Winston Churchill visiting soldiers at Tel El Kebir on 9 August 1942. Scenic and tourist views of Palestine show Warner's seaside billet in Haifa a coffee house and street in Acre and Mt Carmel as well as the Sea of Galilee Lake Tiberias and the atmospheric River Nile. The squadron's transfer to Africa is made via troop train. Aerial photographs of Khartoum are positioned alongside snaps of a sandstorm and by the White Nile Bridge he snaps an RAF hydroplane. In North Africa he mingles with soldiers of the Sudan Defence Force and members of the Khartoum police band. The album closes with a trip along the road to the Congo and time spent on duty at Juba. Landscape quarto commercial album. Original blue roan boards black cloth backstrip 17 black card leaves fixed with metal posts 160 mounted gelatin silver photographs snapshot- to postcard-sized and nearly all amateur manuscript captions on laid-down slips; 4 gelatin silver photographs loosely inserted including 3 snapshots and 163 x 215 mm formal portrait of compiler's class at RAF NCO Training School Hereford. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed joints with just a hint of flaking but the period bindings solid and still extremely attractive survivals. Internally with a handful of quires faintly browned other trivial defects BUT AN UNUSUALLY WELL-PRESERVED SET inside and out.

This lively narrative of travel at the turn of the 18th century includes a wealth of illustrations and a pleasing period bindings. A professor at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris Joseph Pitton de Tournefort 1656-1708 developed a system of botanical classification that became the standard method until it was superseded by Linnaeus in 1753. He made numerous collecting trips throughout his career; the present work is the record of his most significant voyage through Greece Turkey and along the Black Sea to Armenia and Georgia. The expedition which took place between 1700-02 had been proposed by the Comte du Pontchartrain then Secretary of State in 1699 as both a botanical and commercial endeavor. Tournefort's observations include a wealth of botanical detail but are also a rich source of information about the landscapes and peoples he encountered. He was accompanied on this voyage by German botanist Andreas Gundelsheimer and by the painter Claude Aubriet ca. 1665-1742 who had collaborated with Tournefort on his previous work "Eléments de Botanique." The work of Aubriet a botanical illustrator at the Jardin des Plantes was long appreciated by botanists and laypeople alike for its beauty and accuracy. The detailed depictions of plants here are accompanied by illustrated maps and engravings depicting zoological specimens archaeological sites and the costumes and cultures of the areas visited. The account was published posthumously in 1717 first in Paris and then shortly afterward in the present Lyon edition. The bindings here were never meant to be showy but they have come down to us in a remarkable state of preservation given their pedestrian construction and expected use. Chez Anisson et Posuel unknown
