Charged with maintaining the Navy's command of two theatres, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, during a crucial period, its best-known actions were the disabling of the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir, the pursuit and destruction of the Bismarck and the supply of fighter aircraft to the beleagued fortress of Malta.
