Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward 1873-1879 regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 Sept. 5 and Dec. 5 1873 are from Jos. H. McKeehan an attorney in Philadelphia who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 Dec. 18 1873 is from the Village Record a newspaper in West Chester Pa. with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 Nov. 26 1875 is from John Smith of Ridley Park about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Letter #5 Sept. 8 1879 from the superintendant of the Government Paper Mill in Dalton Mass. complaining about the appointment of counters and watchmen at the mill presumably to Ward as a congressman. William Ward 1837-1895 studied law and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1859. He opened a practice in Chester; was involved in real estate and banking; served as a member of the Chester city council and as city solicitor; and was a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Delaware County in the 45th 46th and 47th Congresses 1877-1883. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter. In early May 1844 Protestant nativists in Philadelphia feeling threatened by the inscreasing number of Catholic immigrants held public meetings accusing Catholics of seeking to have the Bible removed from public schools among other things. Incendiary language led to violence in which people and buildings were attacked. The Court of Quarter Sessions created a grand jury to investigate which concluded that the Catholics were to blame and the nativists were "unoffending citizens." On June 18 1844 a meeting of Catholic citizens of the city appointed a committee to draft a response. In this address they refute the unfounded charge that they sought to have the Bible removed from the schools and responded to other recent events. On the first page the original owner's name is written "Ellen Hartman" although the inscriptions are consistently to "Ella." Inscriptions are dated at Catasauqua Allentown and Fullerton Pa. 1889-1891. The towns are all in Lehigh County Pa. 1892006977Tidioute Pa: Banking House of Grandin Brothers 1892. Near Fine. 1 leaf 21 cm. Engraved. "J. L. Grandin. Wm. J. Grandin." Dated July 1 1892 and addressed to A. E. Patton cashier of the First National Bank of Curwensville Pa. Signed by E. M. Curtis cashier. Alexander Ennis Patton 1852-1904 became the president of the First National Bank of Patton when it was established in 1893 and was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate in 1900. The Grandin brothers John Livingston Grandin 1836-1912 William James Grandin 1838-1904 and Elijah Bishop Grandin 1840-1917 in 1859 followed the lead of Edwin Drake in Titusville Pa. who had dug the first successful commercial oil well in the United States earlier that year. With oil money they established the Grandin Brothers Bank in 1870. Victims of the Jay Cooke & Co. bankruptcy in 1873 they exercised their right to take Northern Pacific Railway bonds with land-purchasing rights in the Dakota Territory rather than 15 cents on the dollar. Although the bonds themselves were worthless the 26000 acres they acquired became the largest corporate wheat farm in the Dakota Territory in the late 19th century. Temple Grandin is the great-granddaughter of J. L. Grandin. In Near Fine Condition: lightly creased; clean and bright. Banking House of Grandin Brothers unknown

In observation of the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of the United States in 1787 a banquet was held by eight learned societies in Philadelphia: the University of Pennsylvania the American Philosophical Society the College of Physicians the Law Academy of Philadelphia the Historical Society of Pennsylvania the franklin Institute the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Academy of Natural Sciences. The guest list included President Grover Cleveland former president Rutherford B. Hayes members of the Supreme Court various foreign dignitaries members of Congress state governors and many others. The plates include the menu printed in red and black. Includes the toasts and speeches. Very scarce. In Good- Condition: lacking original wrapper; text block is separating; title page is lightly soiled; minor loss at upper corners of title page which has closed 2-cm. tear from spine; loss at fore-edge and lower corner of final two leaves without loss of text; loss at lower corners of final pages without loss of text; occasional closed tears along spine; text and illustrations are otherwise clean and solid. 18870082231887. Very Good . 1 printed commission form naming Joseph H. LeFevre a notary public dated 30 March 1887 and signed by Gov. James A. Beaver and Charles W. Stone Secretary of Pennsylvania. the form is filled in in an attractive hand with a large gilt seal of Pennsylvania. Attached is a small form indicating that it was recorded in Adams Co. on 1 April 1887 with a smaller gilt seal of the Adams Co. Recorder's Office and the signature of the county recorder I. S. Stonesifer. Israel S. Stonesifer 1839-1928 served in the 165th Pennsylvania Infantry during the Civil War. In addition to serving as county recorder he was assistant superintendent of Gettysburg National Military Park. James A. Beaver 1837-1914 served during the Civil War as lt. col. of the 45th Pa. volunteers and then as colonel of the 148th Pa. volunteers being wounded several times and eventually losing a leg. He served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1887 to 1891 and from 1895 to his death in 1914 sat on the state Superior Court. Charles W. Stone 1843-1912 was in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives 1870-1871; in the Pennsylvania State Senate 1877-1878; Lieut. Gov. 1879-1883; and was secretary of Pennsylvania 1887-1890 when he was elected to represent the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. Each page contains work in pencil beginning with basic shapes and letters and concluding with several pages of landscapes and other scenes. From the 8th leaf onward they are dated from April to June 1876 and then 2 from Nov. possibly 1879. The Union Benevolent Association was established in 1831 to provide assistance to Philadelphia residents by lending stoves to help heat their homes during a harsh winter along with wood and coal. The intention was to help the "worthy poor" without regard for religion or race. The activities of the organization have evolved since 1831; today it provides grants to projects to fight poverty. This report contains the constitution and by-laws of the Union Benevolent Association as well as detailed data about the people with whom the association had worked in the previous year. The male officers of the Association are listed; none of the members of the Ladies' Board of Managers are named although the majority of the report is theirs. Scarce. In Very Good Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; lower corner of front wrapper creased; lower corner of title page lightly soiled; minor damage at lower edge of back wrapper and final pages; otherwise clean and tight.
