TransportationIndustrial Disasters Atlantic City railroad disaster photo archive likely documenting the July 30 1896 collision west of Atlantic City New Jersey one of the deadliest American railroad accidents of the 1890s. The wreck occurred when a West Jersey Railroad excursion train carrying members of the Improved Order of Red Men fraternal organization from Bridgeton and Salem crossed the Reading Railroad line and was struck by a Philadelphia express crushing loaded passenger coaches and leaving dozens dead and injured. The local Atlantic City photographer's stamp the beach and pier crowd the open rail junction the smashed wooden coachwork and the dense public gathering around the debris all support identification with the Atlantic City disaster rather than a more inland wreck. <br /> <br /> Photo archive of 4 albumen photographs each approx 7.5 x 8 inches mounted on boards measuring approximately 10 x 12 inches Atlantic City New Jersey likely 1896. At the wreck site men in suits caps work clothes and shirt sleeves stand among splintered timbers exposed wheel assemblies broken coach framing twisted metal and scattered railroad debris. A damaged passenger car remains partly upright with its roof torn open and side panels crushed while another wreck scene includes telegraph poles parallel tracks a railroad signal and a wide crowd gathered across the right of way. Workers and onlookers climb over the wreckage stand on overturned components and cluster around the remains of the coaches giving the scenes the character of both recovery work and public witnessing. The fourth view shows the community Atlantic City's shore economy with men women and children gathered along the beach and crowded across a pier many in formal summer dress hats and parasols. Verso stamp reads: "W. Crompton & Co. 132 N. South Carolina Ave. Atlantic City N.J. Duplicates can be furnished at Short Notice."<br /> <br /> By the 1890s Atlantic City had become a major East Coast resort town and railroad access was central to its growth; the same excursion system that filled its beaches also concentrated large numbers of passengers in wooden cars vulnerable to catastrophic collision. The presence of a local commercial photographer's stamp is significant indicating that these disaster scenes circulated as purchasable local views for an audience already accustomed to buying Atlantic City souvenirs. Mounts toned and soiled prints faded with some loss of contrast scattered surface wear and staining to mounts one with slight loss at upper right corner; overall in good condition. The archive preserves the immediate aftermath wreckage and response to a major Atlantic City disaster in the late 19th century. unknown

Very Good. 5 printed documents published by the Manufacturers' Association of Delaware County Pennsylvania in 1875 1876 and 1877. #1: 20 x 13 cm. Announcement of a meeting of the Manufacturers of Delaware County to be held on Nov. 20 1875 "to obtain relief from the burdensome and unequal taxation suffered" by those manufacturers. By order of Samuel Riddle president of the group. Pencil notations on the back headed "Riddle mill burned." #2-3: 26 x 21 cm. Printed notice dated Nov. 29 1875 from a committee of Manufacturers of Delaware County urging individual manufacturers to explain to their county assessor "the great depreciation in the value of machinery since the last triennial assessment." The committee are Amos Gartside James Stephens and Abram Blakeley. Includes a list of assessors of Delaware County for 1876. There are 2 copies of this one with an ink note reading: "Jno. R. Rhodes." #4: 21 x 13 cm. Printed letter dated May 6 1876 from William Ward "Acting for Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers." Ward who represented Pennsylvania in Congress from 1877 to 1883 requests the recipient to have the "enclosed memorial" signed by all employees "both male and female" to be used during the debate on the Morrison Free Trade Bill. #5: 21 x 25 cm. Printed letter dated Jan. 29 1877 from Amos Gartside and James Stephens on behalf of the Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers. To manufacturers urging them to talk to the county assessors in their districts about the burden put on Delaware County manufacturers by the "unfair and unequal valuation and taxation of machinery." Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: all are lightly creased; closed 2-cm. tear from edgeof #1; several closed tears of less than 1 cm. from edges; minor loss near upper edge of #1; slight discoloration on #5. History of Lancaster Lebanon Dauphin Counties Pennsylvania touching also on York Cumberland Berks Schuylkill and Northumberland Counties specifically providing the township borough and county boundary descriptions in the period between 1729 and 1848 during which time Dauphin County was formed from portions of Lancaster County and Lebanon County formed from portions of Dauphin and Lancaster. Brown 1/4 leather mottled paper over boards with "Halifax Township" possibly indicating former Township ownership gilt on leather label on front panel. Leather is chipped with some loss at both spine extremities; board edges and corners are rubbed. Former ownership inscription of W. J. Daniel Elizabethville Dauphin Co. PA" on front pastedown dated 1915. Front endpapers show soiling and a stain that bleeds through lightly onto the first plate. 14 pp. index illus. w/ 6 hand-colored plates No. 1 shows approx. 1" square of loss to blank portion of page. Interior shows occasional light soiling with a dime-sized soil mark on the top edge of each leaf near the binding gutter.
