Bound in brown pebbled leather with gilt titles and gilt embossed seals of New York City all edge gilting printed on heavy coated paper. Chips to the leather splitting at the joints rear inner hinge split and separating rear cover loose moisture residue affecting the rear hinge and last 16 sheets street maps leaving one to two inches of the map stuck to its facing page at the bind. Quite a charming book with engraved illustrations throughout -- "The Position in Quadrille" "Position for Round Dancing" and the like. De Garmo who taught dance at West Point enjoyed several editions of his book. This first edition copy belonged to Prof. Henry F. Laube who taught dance in the 1870's to Richmond's young ladies at Levy's Hall at the corner of Main and 11th Streets. Very nice Richmond Association item. 1872008766Philadelphia 1872. Fine. 1 card 7.2 x 12 cm. printed on one side: "Assemblies. Foyer of the Academy of Music." Langhorn Wister's name is written in as the person to be admitted. The names of the patronesses are printed: Mrs. Hartman Kuhn Mrs. Harry McCall Mrs. Charles Macalater Jr. Mrs. Francis Peters Mrs. George Blight and Mrs. Edward Merrell. With this is a light pink sheet 16 x 12 cm. folded and printed with the dates Mon. Jan. 15 Tues. Jan. 30 and Thurs. Feb. 8 and times. The music began at 9:00 the German Cotillion was at 12:00 and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia also known as "The Assemblies" was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States. To attend one either had to be a subscriber a person invited who pays a fee to attend or be sponsored by a subscriber. After the Civil War the Assemblies were held at the Academy of Music until 1904 when it moved to the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. Langhorne Wesley Wister 1834-1891 was the son of William Wister and Sarah Logan Fisher Wister and served as a Brev. Brig. Gen. in the Civil War. No year is given; 1872 1877 and 1883 are the years in which the calendar corresponds to the dates given between the end of the Civil War and Wister's death. A fair to good copy with heavy wear to the extremeties most pronounced at the spine ends. Both hinges are split and fragile but boards still attached. Front free endpaper detached otherwise all pages bound in and intact. Previous owners inscriptions to the first blank - one from 1881 and one from 1968 - otherwise an unmarked copy. Pages with age toning and a bit of foxing text clean and legible. 263 pp. indexed ahistory of the church's first 100 years. However they can be distinguished from one another in two ways. The 1897 first printing is bound in blue cloth while the 1900 printing has a black cloth binding. Note: This does not appear to be inscribed/signed by Wheeler as the handwriting differs markedly from Wheeler's. A very worn copy in green cloth with bowed covers hinges cracked but still holding though just barely spotting significant tears and wrinkles at upper spine. Some pages corner-creased. A resident of Augusta Georgia Black born in Stamping Ground Kentucky in 1842; died in Augusta in 1928 served as a Confederate soldier in the 9th Kentucky Cavalry in Georgia Tennessee and Kentucky. He was also a lawyer state legislator and US representative. General Wheeler born in Augusta Georgia attended West Point becoming one of the youngest Confederate generals at age 26. Lacking publication information but consistent with others in this series published by Hubbard in 1897. Contains 5 short tales about animal characters: The Quarrel -- The Wolf's First Party -- The Dissatisfied Owl -- The Squirrel's Visitor -- Meddlesome Pater. Based on 6 illustrations by Palmer Cox best known as the creator of the Brownie books. This was intended for use as a promotional booklet. The back wrapper has an illustration of a knight and jester holding a large broadside with a brownie peeking out from under it. In this case the broadside and the inside of the back wrapper have been filled in with advertising for Atmore & Son purveyor of plum pudding and mincemeat at 110 Tasker St. Philadelpha Pa. English immigrant Frederick B. Atmore was reportedly the first person to do make and sell mincemeat in the United States. After his death his son Robert E. Atmore established Atmore & Sons. In Good Condition: spine starting to separate at ends; opened carelessly with chip out of fore-edge of front wrapper with small loss of illustration and larger loss from fore-edge of 2nd leaf of text without impact on text or illustration; old stain along lower edge of wrapper and final 2 leaves and at lower end of gutter throughout; otherwise clean and bright. Also included is a real photo post card of St. Mark's . Corners and spine ends lightly bumped covers lightly scuffed with a few small spots on front cover; invitation is in excellent condition with a small damp stain at very top pages; interior is very nice with just some toning around perimeter of pages no writing or marks the small damp stain mentioned above affects only the title page.
