Notably well preserved presentation copy showing a pastedown 4" x 3.5" mounted on front fixed endpaper inscribed "Faithfully yours / Jacob A. Riis / Christmas 1909." Mounted on the adjacent front flyleaf is the calling card of the recipient Mr. William W. J. Warren inscribed as follows: "Christmas 1909. -- / Mr. Riss sic called today -- / he gave me his autograph / for front cover of book." Also signed by a later owner William Duncan along top edge of front flyleaf. Warren is mentioned on p. 435 of Riis's text as W. W. J. Warren "faithful in good and in evil report" among the author's concluding acknowledgments where a second calling card stained by rust from a paper clip no long present is laid in pp. 435-440 are slightly indented from the clip and pp. 434 440 and 441 show a light rust impression. According to his obituary in American Stationer & Office Manager Vol. 88 Warren 1844-1921 was president of Stewart Warren & Co. a stationery manufacturing firm located at 129 Lafayette St. in New York a personal friend of Henry Ward Beecher and lived in the Richmond Hill section of Brooklyn as the next-door neighbor of Riis until the latter moved to Barre MA where he died in 1914. Original illustrated edition of an influential autobiography by the pioneering documentarian photographer and social reformer whose "How the Other Half Lives" was a landmark expose of living conditions in the Lower East Side tenements that led to reforms and provided Riis with an international reputation. Announcement of a meeting of the Manufacturers of Delaware County to be held on Nov. 20 1875 "to obtain relief from the burdensome and unequal taxation suffered" by those manufacturers. By order of Samuel Riddle president of the group. Pencil notations on the back headed "Riddle mill burned." #2-3: 26 x 21 cm. Printed notice dated Nov. 29 1875 from a committee of Manufacturers of Delaware County urging individual manufacturers to explain to their county assessor "the great depreciation in the value of machinery since the last triennial assessment." The committee are Amos Gartside James Stephens and Abram Blakeley. Includes a list of assessors of Delaware County for 1876. There are 2 copies of this one with an ink note reading: "Jno. R. Rhodes." #4: 21 x 13 cm. Printed letter dated May 6 1876 from William Ward "Acting for Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers." Ward who represented Pennsylvania in Congress from 1877 to 1883 requests the recipient to have the "enclosed memorial" signed by all employees "both male and female" to be used during the debate on the Morrison Free Trade Bill. #5: 21 x 25 cm. Printed letter dated Jan. 29 1877 from Amos Gartside and James Stephens on behalf of the Committee of Delaware County Manufacturers. To manufacturers urging them to talk to the county assessors in their districts about the burden put on Delaware County manufacturers by the "unfair and unequal valuation and taxation of machinery." Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: all are lightly creased; closed 2-cm. tear from edgeof #1; several closed tears of less than 1 cm. from edges; minor loss near upper edge of #1; slight discoloration on #5. NO margin notes. Includes Ricord's report to Joel Parker Governor of New Jersey on the condition of the state's public schools. A substantial appendix lists reports by the various town superintendents in each of 21 counties from Atlantic to Warren. Since this report was published while the Civil War was still being fought the section on "Schools for Colored Children" may be of some interest: "There is no section of the law nor any decision of the courts that deprives colored children of the advantages of public school instruction it shall be the duty of the trustees of the several school districts to apply the money apportioned to the establishing and maintaining of free schools in which shall be taught all the children the law makes no distinction between children of one nationality or race and children of another " A fold-out chart SEE PHOTO lists 27 key education statistics for each of the state's 21 counties. For example one column records the "Number of colored children who have attended school" in each county and a statewide total 3029.
