"The National Air Races also known as Pulitzer Trophy Races are a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The science of aviation and the speed and reliability of aircraft and engines grew rapidly during this period; the National Air Races were both a proving ground and showcase for this. -- In 1920 publisher Ralph Pulitzer sponsored the Pulitzer Trophy Race and the Pulitzer Speed Trophy for military airplanes at Roosevelt Field Long Island New York in an effort to publicize aviation and his newspaper. The races eventually moved to Cleveland in 1929 where they were known as the Cleveland National Air Races.2 They drew the best flyers of the time including James Doolittle Wiley Post Tex Rankin Frank Hawks Jimmy Wedell Roscoe Turner and others from the pioneer age of aviation. These air races helped to inspire Donald Blakeslee as a young boy. Other races included in the U.S. National Air Races were the Mitchell Trophy Race the Town & Country Club Race for civilians the Kansas City Rotary Club Trophy "for all three military services" and the Glenn Curtiss Trophy Race for "biplanes with engines having less than 510 cubic inches. Starting in 1929 the races usually ran for up to 10 days usually from late August to early September to include Labor Day. Aviation promoter Cliff Henderson was managing director of the National Air Races from 1928 to 1939. During World War II the races were on hiatus. The races included a variety of events including cross-country races originating in Portland Oakland and Los Angeles with a final destination in Cleveland.4: 79-81 Also included were landing contests glider demonstrations airship flights and parachute-jumping contests. The more popular events were the Thompson Trophy Races which started in 1929; a closed-course race where aviators raced their planes around pylons; and the Bendix Trophy Race the "transcontinental air race" across most of the USA starting in 1931. In 1929 a Santa Monica California to Cleveland Ohio route was started for the Women's Air Derby nicknamed the "Powder Puff Derby" featuring well-known female pilots such as Amelia Earhart Pancho Barnes Bobbi Trout and Louise Thaden. Thaden was the winner in the heavy Class D engines with 510-810 cubic inches 8400-13300 cm3 while Phoebe Omlie won the light Class C engines with 275-510 cubic inches 4510-8360 cm3. This was also the year for the first female pylon race the winner of which was awarded the Aerol Trophy beginning in 1931".-wikipedia. unknown

The Indochina refugee crisis was the large outflow of people from the former French colonies of Indochina comprising the countries of Vietnam Cambodia and Laos after communist governments were established in 1975. Over the next 25 years and out of a total Indochinese population in 1975 of 56 million more than 3 million people would undertake the dangerous journey to become refugees in other countries of Southeast Asia Hong Kong or China. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees 250000 Vietnamese refugees had perished at sea by July 1986. More than 2.5 million Indochinese were resettled mostly in North America Australia and Europe. More than 525000 were repatriated either voluntarily or involuntarily mainly from Cambodia. The Indochinese refugees consisted of a number of different peoples including the Vietnamese the Sino-Vietnamese Hoa Cambodians fleeing the Khmer Rouge and hunger ethnic Laotians Iu Mien Hmong other highland peoples of Laos and Montagnard the highland peoples of Vietnam. They fled to nearby countries to seek temporary asylum and most requested permanent resettlement in third countries. The refugee outflow and humanitarian crisis was especially acute in 1979 and 1980. The six hearings printed in this volume focus on Indochina and the chain of events beginning with the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in December 1978 and extending through the United Nations Conference on Cambodia in November 1979 and the subsequent international relief effort for the people of Cambodia. The hearings were arranged chronologically and appear under the subject headings: "SIno-Vietnamese Conflict" "Indochina Refugees" and "Famine in Cambodia". These hearings and the ensuing legislative activity represent in part the response of the Congress to the events of the previous year in Indochina. U. S. Government Printing Office paperback

60409 ½ inches 24 cm. diameter; 21 inches 53 cm. total height. Single pedestal globe with horizon ring armature & meridian all of wood wear and staining on meridian at point where fits into stand some chipping at extremities else fine; globe with vibrant original color and clear sharp patina; some abrasion & losses mostly in lower and upper extremities; overall very good plus condition.<br /><br />An attractive very capably executed table or desk globe in the distinctive style of the Delamarche firm <i>"the most successful French entrepreneurs in maps and globes"</i> Dekker/ van der Krogt. This was an original work by the son Felix who succeeded his father in the management of the firm in 1817. The globe is geographically up-to-date notably in the South Pacific and Alaska with information from then recent Russian voyages such as Krusenstern's. Related to this at the time the globe appeared and reflected on it Europeans were beginning to differentiate between various regions of the Pacific. These were based on a better understanding of cultural and other differences between the peoples of various areas encountered on these recent voyages. For example in 1831 the French explorer Dumont d'Urville proposed the use of the terms "Micronesia" and "Melanesia" for various parts of the Pacific as distinguished from Polynesia. Printed dashed lines on this globe labeled "Division Oceanique" roughly approximate the three eventually accepted divisions of what is referred to as the South Pacific though the regions are not named on the globe. Delamarche also clearly identifies on the globe the more traditional divisions of the Pacific between "Grand Ocean Boreal" "Grand Ocean Equinoxial" and "Grand Ocean Austral."<br /><br />The Delamarche firm was the first to successfully reach a fairly sizable general market of globe buyers. It accomplished this by reducing the cost of constructing globe stands and other parts while maintaining a high level of quality in the maps of their globes which are cleanly and attractively engraved. Traditional brass meridians were replaced by wooden ones and the horizon rings and armatures supporting the rings were greatly simplified and made from either wood or stiff board. Also the firm generally used simpler single-pedestal stands rather than four-legged designs. Yet as this well-preserved example demonstrates Delamarche's design and materials proved to be very durable.<br /><br />Charles-Francois Delamarche 1740-1817 the founder of the family firm was the successor of the great map and globe-making family the Robert De Vaugondys as is cited in the title of this globe. Delamarche in fact seemed to have cornered the globe market in France by also incorporating the stocks of Jean Fortin and Jean Lattre. Delamarche's son Felix took over the firm upon his father's death and managed it until 1848 when Gosselin succeeded him. The firm continued well into the latter 19th century under yet another Delamarche descendent.<br /><br />Dekker/ Van der Krogt <i>Globes from the Western World</i> pp. 63 74; Dekker E. <i>Globes at Greenwich</i> pp. 321-25; Suarez T. <i>Early Mapping of the Pacific</i> p. 25.
