An unusual 18th century letter by a widow in Jamaica seeking assistance for her son from her dead husband's brother. Written in somewhat halting English she writes in part: "I beg Leave to acquant sic you. I was the Widdow of your Bother Mr. Chas. Amos who died the 7 of September 1763 and left me with two children a Daughter named Jane Born December the 3 1758 and a Son Born April 18 1762. The girl I have since had the misfortune to loose. The boy named George is still liveing and was yesterday 11 years of age and is I thank God in good health . The reason of my troubling you now is about 18 months agoe my sister myself not being in town had an applycation made to her by Mr. William Bullock in consequence of a letter he had just recd from on Mr. Campble who to to Mr. Bullock by the desire of the Reverend Mr. Spicer to enquire after me and my children and to acquaint me that he had some Hundred pounds in his possession which belongd to my child in rite of his grandfather . I had some thoughts of carrying him to England myself for his education which cannot be well done in this part of the world where we are badly off for proper schools . Since Mr. Amos death I again married Mr. Jacobi who likewise I have been unhappy enough to loose and am at this time under some embarresment with his affairs . unknown books

Tall thick 8vo in the publisher's original pale blue cloth the upper cover and spine both decorated with ships craps clouds and sunbursts in brown ivory and gilt and with gilt lettering t.e.g. ix 272 4 ads pp. A handsome copy the plates all fine and bright some very occasional and light foxing within the text the lovely decorated binding is solid and firm with very little sign of wear but with a bit of mellowing to the spine front endpaper with cosmetic only spitting at the still-strong hinge. FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE MORE ELUSIVE TITLES IN BLACK'S TRAVEL SERIES A LOVELY BOOK IN FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. The blue seas and sun-drenched islands of the West Indies served as wonderful inspiration for both pen and paintbrush in this hard to find gem. Jamaica receives the lion's share of attention but other subjects include Barbadoes St. Lucia Dominica St. Thomas and Martinique. This album documents interwar travel through the Panama Canal Zone and Jamaica recording maritime transit canal infrastructure and rural Caribbean life as observed by Western travelers. The photographs provide primary visual evidence of the Panama Canal as a site of industrial activity and international movement alongside scenes of Jamaican village life and landscape establishing a contrast between engineered environments and colonial rural settings. The material is particularly strong in its depiction of canal operations and the presence of local populations within these spaces.<br /> <br /> Album containing 29 silver gelatin photographs mounted on black leaves with individual prints measuring approximately 3.5 x 4.5 to 5 x 7 inches housed in a string-bound album measuring approximately 7 x 9.5 inches. The opening sequence shows passengers aboard a steamship with men and women posed along deck rails and views of ships navigating canal locks and docking areas. Additional images depict cranes drawbridges canal cuts and small boats in the water along with dock workers and uniformed personnel visible among travelers. Architectural and infrastructural views include colonial-style buildings and mechanical equipment associated with canal operation concluding with a monument identified as that of Vasco Núñez de Balboa in Panama City. One photograph bears the caption "Kingston Jamaica 10 -- S.S. 'Reliance' West Indies Cruise" showing children and adults gathered along a dirt road lined with wooden and metal-roofed structures. This document is a trading license issued by the governor of Jamaica to the Spanish brig General Castaños commanded by Antonio Herrera. The license is specifically for trade "from the port of Kingston to the Spanish Colonies of America and back to Kingston." It is specifically designed to show British warships who might try to take the vessel as a prize. Further restrictions are printed on the integral second leaf. The document is twice signed in manuscript: "Manchester." An interesting trade document printed in Jamaica. unknown books
First and only edition, [2], 30pp., stitched as issued in blue paper wrappers, a very good copy. The author argues against putting an additional duty on sugar "which... would be a great hardship on the sugar-planter in the West Indies, and very little benefit to the revenue...". He sets out all the costs involved in producing sugar, such as the price of slaves and the cost of keeping them, the higher freight costs, insurance, cost of animals and contributions to the defence force. Finally, he states the advantages of the sugar trade for Britain and shows how an additional duty would be to the detriment of the trade. 1776List3149Knaresborough England 1776. Single three page letter measuring 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Normal wear; Near Fine. A letter from Nathaniel Sharpe in Knaresborough to Edmund Green a merchant in London addressed to Green at the Jamaica Coffee House. This café the first of its kind in London was established in the mid-17th century; in 17th and 18th century Britain coffee houses were popular meeting places particularly for conducting business. Sharpe writes to Green:<br /> <br /> “Your Esteem’d favour of the 22d is before me and the picture you have drawn of the situation of publick affairs are truly very alarming and have no doubt but the Representation is a very just and real one. . But to the following Fact place yourself in my situation and give me your Candid opinion Wether I am safe in letting £2200 lay any longer or whether I ought to call it in and place it out on a Security in this Country.â€<br /> <br /> He describes his investments and states that:<br /> <br /> “I have not one shilling in Trade since 1760 and in Decemr. 1762 Retir’d to this place and found myself in possession of a Happiness that I could ill brook to part with. And which I would wish to preserve. Should this sum be in no danger I can live as usual.â€<br /> <br /> The American Revolutionary War had a significant impact on the British economy; at the time Sharpe was writing although the conflict had been ongoing for some time the war itself was in its early days and uncertainty was high.<br /> <br /> Other than asking for financial advice Sharpe tells Green that Green’s “Brother Tommy had . taken a Cup of Liquor rather too freely and had been drawn into Cards†alarming their mother who had requested that Sharpe inform Green about the event; asks Green to visit her; and sends his good wishes to a mutual friend. unknown

Second edition following the first of 1825 giving accounts of the "wanton cold-blooded" hunting of runaway slaves in Jamaica. The "shooting excursion" in the title refers to the 1824 "attack made by a party of islanders upon a long-established camp of runaway slaves who had lived peaceably for years in a forest settlement" Ragatz. The pamphlet includes summaries of the attack from the MONTEGO BAY GAZETTE CORNWALL COURIER and CORNWALL GAZETTE as well as an illustration of the camp showing the route of the attackers. The author explains that "the barbarous excursions which have been described did not owe their origin to any insurrection of the Negroes in consequence of any discussions in the British Parliament nor in consequence of any stir made by the British people in their behalf. They were as the account itself testifies wanton cold- blooded excursions on the part of the white inhabitants of Trelawny to root up a runaway settlement which had subsisted eleven years without offense or molestation to the neighbourhood" p.6. This edition includes a dismissive note on page 23 about the recently passed Consolidated Slave Act 1826 which was meant to "restrain arbitrary punishments" of slaves among other abuses. <br> <br> The author of the text is unknown signed only at the end in print as "Alfred." This second edition is rather scarce with only five copies listed in OCLC at Yale University of Florida Newberry Library John Carter Brown Library and the University of Manchester. RAGATZ p.409.
