1785001268Worcester MA: Isaiah Thomas Printer 1785. Original Wraps. Poor. Stitched together with modern thread. Consists of 44 pages plus cover with ornate printers device and text on the verso of the cover. Evans ascribes this almanac to Ezra Gleason but modern scholarship suggests this was the work of Samuel Stearns see Australian Public Library catalog information. Of note in this work is an early printing of the Massachusetts Bill of Rights and a printing of John Dod's well known Sermon on Malt a text celebrating beer and ale originally published in England in the 1600's. Also included are the usual astronomical predictions for the year 1786 and a table of principle roads on the continent in and around Boston. In POOR condition with heavy tattering to the cover page and heavy loss around the extremities of that page. The bottom inch of the next page is missing apparently trimmed with no loss of text. A few other pages suffer from minor losses but nothing that affects the text. The rag paper is browned and somewhat darkened with uneven dampstaining throughout again not affecting readability. A few very faint notations present in ink in the margins of a few pages. Front cover barely attached. The rest of the almanac is solid and complete. An essay written during the early stages of the War of Jenkins' Ear 1739-1748 in which conflict between England and Spain mostly took place in the Caribbean sea. The author devotes a large portion of the essay to discussing the present military strength of France and Spain which he deems inferior to the English forces and argues that exerting English strength will be both profitable and inexpensive compared to the previous Anglo-Spanish war. Contains an appendix providing an interesting and detailed description of present Spanish territories in the Caribbean and Americas- including reference to the Spanish galleons and 'Mines of Gold the most famous of which is St Maria'. Pagination runs from 330-384 plus a title page with an illustration of London from the Thames at the head. With a fold-out map of the County of Montgomery as well as a fold-out view of the city and harbor of Fonchall capital of Madeira. A single issue of this British magazine with this issue featuring articles on the then present war between England and France-the Seven Years' War or French and Indian War-including a history and origin of the war a letter from a French officer providing and account of the Siege of Louisburg and a journal of a winter campaign in Canada and the siege of Quebec. Also included is an account of a 'Rebellion of the Negroes in Jamaica' describing Tacky's War or Rebellion in which African enslaved people led by Tacky rebelled against their owners being ultimately defeated. Topics relating to history and religion a mathematical question Dutch designs defeated in the East Indies ships taken by the French etc. are also featured. GOOD condition. Faint creasing to the outer pages with some browning along the extremities. Minor wear along the extremities. Remains of binding along the spine. Very minor scattered foxing. Printed for R. Pagination runs from 3 to 134 with all pages MISSING after 134 135/136. With printer's device at the top of the first page of text and an ornately presented first letter of the text. According to his gravestone in Newburyport Murray took part in recruiting volunteers for the Continental Army. This work presents his sermons focusing on Romans V.I. POOR condition lacking and wraps and endpapers as well as pages 135/136. Collated and otherwise complete. Appears disbound from a larger work with white cloth tape and a strip of modern paper along the binding edge of the title page. Moderate to heavy browning to the paper. Minor scattered soiling foxing and staining throughout. Fore edges of the first several pages chipped curled torn and worn with some loss. Upper corners curled over. Minor chipping and tearing along the lower extremity. Tears repaired at the center fore edge of the title page somewhat crudely done with a 3 inch and 1 inch paper patch. Heavy chipping tearing creasing and curling to the last 30 or so pages along the core edge. Large tear to the lower corner of the last page. With a dedicatory epistle to the King of Sweden. A chronicle of the Incans in Peru recounting briefly their life and culture before the arrival of the Spanish including an account of several festivals. Most of this work describes the Spanish conquest of South America in particular Peru and the Incans and the actions of Pizarro. EX-LIBRARY in FAIR/GOOD condition. Date sticker and small circular sticker on the lower spine. Library bookplate on the inside cover. Purple ownership stamp on the fore edge inside front cover and one page in the middle of the text. Upper front hinge split and separating along the upper 3 inches. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the leather especially along the extremities. Minor soiling uneven fading and a few very minor stains present to the covers. Extremities bumped and worn. Text block solid with scattered foxing and minor soiling throughout. Heavy dampstain in the upper and lower gutter of the first few pages disappearing by the first dedication page. Sabin record 44653 does not list this particular printing year. Printed by A. First edition of what many consider to be America's first epic poem blending religious allegory with the recent events of the American Revolution and George Washington. Timothy Dwight was an American educator and minister. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers with minor soiling and staining. Spine rather darkened. Leather split along the entire front hinge. Covers a bit bowed. Three purple ink stamps on the first end paper and inside front cover belonging to the previous owner William C. Byer a Free-will Baptist minister who apparently really wanted everyone to know this was his book. One stamp on the rear inside cover. An alphabetically arranged encyclopedia style work on the geography settlements and people of North and South America as well as islands in the Caribbean and South Pacific. This includes the east coast of Australia then termed New Holland. POOR condition. Front cover DETACHED with any front endpapers up to the frontis map MISSING frontis map is present. Leather scuffed frayed and worn along the extremities and hinges. A few small spots of staining to the covers. Previous owner's bookplate present. Text block solid and a bit toned. Howes M839. This work served to heavily influence the teaching of geography and education in the US. GOOD condition. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the leather covers and extremities with a few deep scrapes and scratches present. Minor soiling and staining. Interiors solid with moderate toning scattered foxing staining and soiling. Dampstaining present to the endpapers. Ownership signatures present. A few pages creased including dog ear creases. The Virginia map is very tattered torn and misfolded with a few other American maps also bearing tears ranging from small to long along the folds. Some creasing to the maps. Sabin 50926.
