Written by two people held in the Lucas County Jail in Toledo Ohio consisting primarily of a piece on recent protests and unrest in the jail due to those incarcerated seeking better conditions and more rights. Based on the tone and information it appears that the concerns of the incarcerated were addressed and met with compromises reached that satisfied a majority of the incarcerated. FAIR/GOOD condition missing all pages after the sixth leaf. Last leaf DETACHED. General toning with heavy wrinkling and creasing at the top left corner. Minor soiling and staining. A rather ornate silk ribbon perhaps issued for a convention or meeting of the Home Literary Association. The piece consists of one large ribbon with two smaller ribbons attached at the top. A silk flower type piece with gold colored sequins in a star formation at the top. Floor Manager patch sewn on. Nothing could be found about the organization. GOOD condition. With illustrations lacking the aforementioned fold-out frontis. All others present as called for including one colored plate and several fold outs. A detailed history of West Point to its vital use as a fort on the Hudson during the American Revolution to its eventual transformation into a military academy. This includes discussion of the chain across the Hudson to obstruct passage during the war and Benedict Arnold and his secret correspondences and plot. FAIR condition lacking the abovementioned pages. Moderate to heavy scuffing to the covers heaviest along the hinges. General fading. Minor soiling with a few faint stains to the rear cover. Tefferteller detailing the efforts of the Pre-Delinquent Gang Project at the Henry Street Settlement in New York. The report explains in depth the formation of groups such as the Lucky Seven of children divided by age. The programs work and notable incidents regarding each group are included such as police encounters among the older group. Names of the children are mentioned in some instances as well as general statistics such as race. Tefferteller worked for 21 years at the Henry Street Settlement in a variety of roles that promoted social welfare among lower income children and families. The Henry Street Settlement was established in 1893 to offer assistance to those in need primarily in the Lower East Side of New York. GOOD condition. Second and perhaps final issue of this zine created by Maril Shrewsbury. Although listed as a member of FAPA Fantasy Amateur Press Association this zine appears to have little to nothing to do with fantasy in the sense meant. Shrewsbury was a carnival worker who was tasked with painting 12 by 26 inch pictures in under 6 minutes see Fancyclopedia 3 website. Her first issue of Heck drew heavily on carnival life and culture while this issue only offers two pages of insight into the culture. The rest is devoted to snippets of letters subtle sexual innuendo etc. All said this zine feels well ahead of its time. GOOD condition. Uneven toning and fading along the extremities. The flier advertises a discussion held by Harriet Muhammad a columnist for Muhammad Speaks the newspaper for the Nation of Islam. Held at the Salem Baptist Church in Los Angeles on Sunday July 12th the discussion covered topics including: "the Muslim Movement the power structure and the Civil Rights Movement;" "Messenger Elijah Muhammad;" "Separation vs. Integration;" and "Proposals of the Nation of Islam." Single issue of this journal this featuring a full page front cover political cartoon by Thomas Nast. Titled "The Political Niagara-A Drowning Man Catches at a Straw" the work depicts the Democratic Party just about to go over the falls grasping at a cane that bears the head of an African American man with a sign to the write mentioning the S.P. Chase as their candidate for president. A US flag in the distance reads Grant/Colfax. Nasr and Harper's were politically aligned with Lincoln and his Republican Party with Nast perhaps alluding to African Americans as a way to gain political salvation for the Democratic Party. Interior features a part of "The Moonstone" by Wilkie Collins as well as a large illustration accompanying an article detailing a duel between two African American men near Savannah Georgia but apparently in South Carolina. The duel was between Jackson Brand and Eugene Moorehead as the result of alleged political loyalties. Moorehead apparently was part of a conservative group to which Jackson Brand had recently joined having previously been a Republican. A duel with shotguns was fought with Brand mortally wounded. FAIR/GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Moderate toning with some soiling and offsetting. Some chipping and tearing mostly along the fore edge. Pages 411-416 with a 2 inch triangular piece torn off from the fore edge affecting some text. Pages 407-416 have a tear at the upper middle right small at first and increasing larger toward the end affecting text and illustrations in that area. Harper and Brothers unknown
