1790020717Portsmouth NH: No publisher 1790. Unbound. Good. A letter by Samuel Hill asking Amos White for all the flaxseed he has on hand and to call on Mr. Tappen for what seed he would send. He also refers to a Mr. Champney and furs . Amos White was a Dover New Hampshire merchant while Samuel Hill was a merchant in Portsmouth apparently importing and exporting items from the ships that anchored there. GOOD. 1753021222No Place: No publisher 1753. Unbound. Good. Single sheet. Handwritten deposition recalling the testimony of Captain Robert Evans describing the lay out of the town of Rochester mentioning a pine tree standing three rods due Southwest from the lower side of the first cove on the Southwesterly side of the Salmon Falls River and going on to mention other landmarks such as a round rock and a large white birch. We surmise that Captain Robert Evans was the same as that who died in 1753 in his eighties the deposition also mentions his age and who was described in his obituary as a rolling stone. Signed by a justice of the peace Joseph Simpson and stating Province of New Hampshire Sept. 19th 1753. Reverse notes this was recorded in Dover town records. GOOD condition. Old white tape repairs to the reverse. Horizontal and vertical fold creases present. Minor foxing and spotting. No publisher unknown

Bound in cloth with leather spine. Features many full page accounts of various purchases and transactions between local businesses merchants and people including the Limerick Manufacturing Mills. This book features extensive manuscript description of various transactions and indentures almost all attested to in signature by Norris Berry Clerk of Limerick Maine. Also within on page 196 is a handwritten Certificate of Naturalization Petition for a Hubert Gath formerly of Great Britain. Also found within are several receipts and bills. Exterior in FAIR condition being internally very good. Moderate to heavy soiling to the covers with several stains uneven fading and some scuffing also present. This wear mostly affects the front cover. Some scuffing and bumping to the extremities. Very minor soiling to the interior with uneven fading to the pages. The tipped in receipts are browned along the fore edge extremities. Slight musty odor to the book. No printer or publisher Given unknown
008831No Place: No Publisher. Unbound. Fair. Handwritten letter detailing the medical procedures undertaken to heal an 'ununited fracture of the humerus.' No author date or location although dates in the text indicate the treatment took place around 1851-1852 perhaps in Massachusetts. Single sheet folded into four pages all full of writing. The author documents his encounter with a 28 year old male who had broken his humerus in a carriage fall. It had not healed correctly despite attempts by other doctors. The doctor/author of this letter recalls his efforts to reset the bones including removing callouses and other treatments that eventually led to an apparent somewhat successful outcome. FAIR/GOOD condition. A one by two inch area of loss present at the upper left corner resulting in small amounts of MISSING text in that location on the first two pages. Dark browning present in this area with other small spots of browning and staining to the paper. Small hole at the center fore edge with a few letters missing because of this. Another tiny hole present in the last page. Horizontal fold creases present. A few tiny tears along the extremities. Light fading. No Publisher unknown

A catalog to various automobiles including cars trucks and other commercial vehicles made by a variety of manufacturers. Includes cost principal mechanical details and specifications. Manufacturers include Auburn Apperson Chevrolet Durant Haynes Dodge Studebaker Olds Nash Pierce-Arrow etc. Perhaps of note are four pages of electric vehicles including cars and commercial vehicles made by Rauch and Lang Autocar and Ward Motor Vehicle Company. While electric cars had been around since the late 1800s their use declined by 1920 due to innovations in gasoline power car design and discovery of vast amounts of oil rendering them all but obsolete by the early to mid 1920s. GOOD condition. Five strips of yellowed tape present across the spine. Covers and text block a bit wavy presumably from water exposure at some point. Minor soiling fading and discoloration to the covers. Faint dampstain visible along the fore edges of all the pages in the interior. National Automobile Chamber of Commerce unknown

A supposedly "analytical" report on the Black Panther Party discussing its origins ideology and methodology in achieving its aims. The work cites the words of Black Panther Party leaders and ex-members and subtly seeks to tie the party to foreign groups communists seeking to overthrow the US government while ignoring the facts in some cases such as the murder of Fred Hampton that would portray the US government in a poor light. The report was issued by the Committee on Internal Security formerly known as the House of Un-American Activities Committee chaired by Richard Ichord a staunch anti-communist. GOOD condition. Thomas Hollis Chemist Publisher. Boston: no date presumed sometime between 1826 and 1853 based on the address of 30 Union Street in Boston. Thomas Hollis was located at 23 Union Street after 1853. Single piece of paper folded into two approximately 8 by 10 sheets each containing the same information. A short paragraph of directions for using French hair dye "without coloring the skin or injuring the hair." The key to this may have been the overnight application of lettuce or cabbage leaves to the hair. Thomas Hollis apparently established his business in 1821 and sold prescription drugs among others. His sons took over the business in 1875. GOOD condition. Moderate uneven darkening with a few small faint dampstains to the paper. Minor wrinkling. A hint of staining and soiling. SIGNED by Eugene McCarthy Hubert Humphrey Walter Mondale and Harold Stassen. Beside serving in various elected political positions including 2 as Vice-Presidents of the United States all four ran are also noted for having run unsuccessfully for president. Harold Stassen ran many times as a Republican candidate never receiving his party's nomination; Walter Mondale served as Vice-President from 1977-81 and ran against Ronald Reagan in 1984; Hubert Humphrey served as Vice-President from 1965-69 and ran against Richard Nixon in 1968; Eugene McCarthy is perhaps best known for his 1968 presidential run where he gained some success running as an anti-war candidate opposed to Johnson's handling of the Vietnam War. A program of events for a convention held by the Fashion League of America listing the board of directors members of various committees etc. as well as a list of talks and fashion shows to be held. This includes an opening fashion show and one displaying French fashions. Talks look at the business side of dressmaking and fashion. The Fashion Art League of America was founded by Alla Ripley Bannister in 1913 after she became president of the Chicago Dressmakers Club and reorganized it. Going by her professional name Madame Ripley she was influential in promoting fashion as an art and establishing it as a business for women at a time when women were expected to give up work once married. She took part in a 1913 fashion show in Chicago that featured dresses and clothing inspired by European Cubism and worked throughout her career to promote American fashion as equal or superior to French fashions see The Beverly Review Sept. 17 2019 article for previous information. Also included is a look at the progress of the abolitionists and the efforts by the government to 'nationalize' the institution of slavery. Small octavo 7 3/4" x 5" bound in original publisher's blind stamped decorative gray cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Second edition.<br /><br />James Thome was the son of a Kentucky slaveholder. But from early on he harbored uneasy feelings about slavery and in 1834 that uneasiness turned to unqualified abhorrence when as a theological student he attended an extended debate on the morality of slavery. Soon Thome was serving as a traveling agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society and by 1837 he and a companion Horace Kimball were conducting a study for the society on the results of slave emancipation in the British West Indies. In the report on this trip Emancipation in the West Indies Thome and Kimball offered evidence that firmly refuted the prevailing belief among abolitionists that slavery could only be eliminated gradually because most slaves would need to be prepared for life in freedom. As a result the American Anti-Slavery Society shifted from its advocacy of gradual emancipation to a demand for "unconditional freedom without delay."<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Previous owner's neat old quil name on front pastedow; corners gently bumped; edge wear; corners and spine ends rubbed else about very good. A collection of weekly newspapers featuring local news commentary on politics national and international news. This includes the blockade of Cadiz Haitian literature a short piece on 'Another Black Conspiracy' recalling an uncovered plot of rebellion of African-Americans in Havana Cuba; an account from General Leavenworth recalling his fighting and encounters with the Ricara Native American tribe of the Missouri River area etc. Seba Smith was a 19th century American humorist from Maine known as being one of the first writers to use the American vernacular in humor Wikipedia. 1835022270Dover NH: J.T. Gibbs Publisher 1835. Quarter Leather. Poor. Folio. Quarter leather with marbled paper covered boards. Large folio. Bound volume of the Dover New Hampshire newspaper the Dover Gazette and Strafford Advertiser comprising of every weekly issue spanning from December 2 1834 to November 24 1835. Of particular note is a printing of the Treaty of New Echota a treaty that a small minority of members of the Cherokee Indian Tribe signed and that sold their land east of the Mississippi River to the US government. This treaty led directly to the forced removal of the Cherokee people from their land infamously known as the Trail of Tears. Also present is a lengthy account of the trial of the Prophet Matthais for murder. This trial also accused Sojourner Truth who at the time worked as a servant for Matthais under the name Isabella of murder. Matthias alias of Robert Matthews was a pseudo-religious figure in the early to mid 1800s establishing a cult like following in New York. He even had a meeting with Joseph Smith at one point although both denounced each other as Satanic according to Wikipedia. Another notable articles is present discussing a racially integrated school established in Canaan New Hampshire the Noyes Academy. Established in 1835 by abolitionists the school educated African Americans and admitted women. This school aroused the racist ire of local residents and was destroyed by townspeople in August of 1835. The August 25th issue has an approving article documenting the destruction and writing as if scandalous that African American men and supposedly respectable white women had been seen walking arm in arm in town. Other articles on slavery antislavery and abolition are found throughout. POOR/FAIR condition. Ex-library with exterior spine labels interior pastedowns and minor markings. Both covers DETACHED along with the first several leaves. Last several leaves also detached. Binding essentially perished rendering the whole text block rather fragile. Bound volume of the Dover New Hampshire newspaper the Dover Gazette and Strafford Advertiser comprising of every weekly issue spanning from December 4 1832 to November 28 1833. Of particular note is a printing of Andrew Jackson's proclamation on Nullification asserting that states could not override or disregard federal law. This was issued in response to South Carolina's refusal to enforce tariffs. Also present is an article written by George Catlin on the Mandan tribe recalling customs ceremonies and dress among other subjects. The tribe had been decimated by small pox with an estimated 125 remaining by 1838. Also present is an article on the Native American leader Black Hawk written a little after his capture. A small paragraph describes a former Mormon displeasure with the faith. GOOD condition. Ex-library with exterior spine labels interior pastedowns and minor markings. First leaf DETACHED. Minor scuffing fading soiling to the covers. Years written on masking tape taped to the spine with some other tape repairs on the spine. Paper a bit browned and brittle. J.T.
