br. A un giornalista di «Excelsior» Ravel dichiara nel 1931: «... io lavoro troppo e dormo solo due ore per notte. Ora, la resistenza umana non è senza limiti. Ma tutto il piacere dell'esistenza consiste nell'incalzare la perfezione sempre un poco più da vicino, nel rendere un po' meglio il fremito segreto della vita». Non è difficile riconoscere in frasi del genere quel tono di dandysmo che aveva caratterizzato la gioventù di Ravel, ma tanti anni sono passati dall'epoca delle prime illuminazioni e in quello sforzo per «rendere un po' meglio il fremito segreto della vita» l'estetica ha dovuto misurarsi con i tormenti del quotidiano, con le solitudini, con le delusioni, con le ondate non certo generose delle mode culturali, alle quali si può opporre soltanto la ricerca delle proprie ragioni più intime, ed ecco allora profilarsi dietro l'immagine dell'uomo elegante e del conversatore raffinato la sagoma del lavoratore insonne, instancabile nell'inseguire il miraggio di quella perfezione che sola è capace di fondare e garantire l'esistenza. Sono qui raccolti gli scritti (in gran parte frutto della sua attività di critico musicale) e le interviste rilasciate da Ravel a giornali di tutto il mondo in occasione delle sue tournée: documenti rivelatori della personalità dell'uomo e dell'artista, fin qui sparpagliati in un numero impressionante di pubblicazioni in lingua, e comunque di difficile accesso, in alcuni casi introvabili.
