19733299Princeton University Press. 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 233 pages; Athens was the dominant maritime power in the West from the eighth to fourth centuries BCE. Athenian preeminence insured that its maritime law was accepted throughout the Mediterranean world. Indeed its influence outlasted Athens and is the only area of classical Greek law that wasn't replaced entirely by Roman models. Codified during the Roman period in the Rhodian Sea laws it went on to influence the subsequent development of European commercial and maritime law. Cohen explores the development of Athenian maritime law the jurisdiction and procedure of the courts and the Athenian principles that have endured to the present day. . 0691092273 . Very light shelfwear else Fine.; Potsdamer Altertumswissenschaftliche Beitrage Pawb Band 34; 532 pages; English summary: The ability to translate the inner world of ideas into image displays is one of the original human characteristics. The figments of imagination translated into the communicative sphere as images represent not only external forms but also memories conveyed fears hopes or other emotions. This is especially true as it pertains to religion. But what image of God did the majority of Greeks of the ancient world hold and what were their godly images The book by Peter Eich focuses on the prevailing ideas that religious image production held in Greece as well as on the community-building function of religious images over the course of time. Contemporary testimonies are fully investigated and reinterpreted in their idiom and their contexts of meaning. German text. 20087336Oxbow Books. 2008. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. 328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered and is continuing to pioneer the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project and therefore in this book each object is revealed from the inside and because of this it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights such as the origin of modern Greek retsina which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work. . 1842172387 . Oxbow Books hardcover

Per Wikipedia John Clarke Stobart 1878 - 1933 Commonly Known As J. C. Stobart Was A Classical Scholar A University Of Cambridge Lecturer An Hm Inspector Of Schools And The Bbc's First Director Of Education. After The War He Helped Organize The 1924 British Empire Exhibition At Wembley And In 1925 Joined The Bbc As Its First Director Of Education. He Was Responsible For Two Long-Lasting Programs Children's Hour And The Epilogue And According To One Source Suggested The Bbc's Motto 'Nation Shall Speak Peace Unto Nation'. He Also Proposed Creating A New Cultural Network To Be Named The Minerva Programme After The Roman Goddess Of Wisdom But This Idea Was Turned Down And Was Not Realised Until The Creation Of 'The Third Programme' At The End Of The Second World War. Stobart Became Well-Known All Over The World For His Regular New Year's Eve Broadcast 'The Grand Good-Night'. He Disagrees With Edward Gibbon's Pessimistic View Of The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire Pointing Out That 'The Mere Notion Of Empire Continuing To Decline And Fall For Five Centuries Is Ridiculous' And Remarking That 'This Is One Of The Cases Which Prove That History Is Made Not So Much By Heroes Or Natural Forces As By Historians' Since 'If All The Roman Historians Had Perished And Only The Inscriptions Remained We Should Have A Very Different Picture Of The Roman Empire A Picture Much Brighter And I Think Much More Faithful To Truth.' He Admires The Romans For Their Law Discipline Engineering And Especially Their Sanitation But It Is Clear That He Prefers The Greeks For Their Art Philosophy Mathematics And Literature.

Sidgwick & Jackson hardcover
