200139275University of Michigan Press. 2001. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Very light edgewear to DJ with 1 tiny chip.; 320 pages; Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos the Ornament of Ionia Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern integrated history of the city collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy oligarchy tyranny and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor Gorman's book will engage classicists historians and Near Eastern specialists. . 047211199X . Very slight shelfwear else Fine.; Phoenix Supplementary Volume; 300 pages; Scholars have long known that the Egyptian Ptolemaic monarchy underwent a transformation between 323 and 30 BC. The queens of that dynasty started as subordinates of the kings but ended as their superiors. Exactly when and how this change occurred has proven problematic for modern scholars. R. A. Hazzard argues that this change was put in motion by Ptolemy II who glorified his sister ArsinoT and made acceptable a civilian style of kingship based on piety towards his real and mythical ancestors. Ptolemy's support and elevation of his sister inspired the queens of the line to assert themselves at the expense of their male associates. The process culminated in the absolute rule of Kleopatra VII after 47 BC. Hazzard presents a clear argument based on the numismatic epigraphical papyrological literary and historical sources. . 0802043135 . University of Toronto Press hardcover

Very minor shelfwear else Fine.; Studies in the Ancient and Medieval Art of Warfare V; 189 pages; Sekunda argues that in the 160s BC the Ptolemaic and Seleucid infantry were reorganized to make them more successful and more competitive against the might of the Romans. This Romanization of the military took the form of new tactics and changes in the organization and in the equipment given to the soldier with evidence coming from archaeological literary epigraphic and iconographic sources. Includes letter and postcard from author tipped in. Lower corners bumped.; 324 pages; Thucydides Pericles and the Idea of Athens in the Peloponnesian War is the first comprehensive study of Thucydides' presentation of Pericles' radical redefinition of the city of Athens during the Peloponnesian War. Martha Taylor argues that Thucydides subtly critiques Pericles' vision of Athens as a city divorced from the territory of Attica and focused instead on the sea and the empire. Thucydides shows that Pericles' reconceputalization of the city led the Athenians both to Melos and to Sicily. Toward the end of his work Thucydides demonstrates that flexible thinking about the city exacerbated the Athenians' civil war. Providing a thorough critique and analysis of Thucydides' neglected book 8 Taylor shows that Thucydides praises political compromise centered around the traditional city in Attica. In doing so he implicitly censures both Pericles and the Athenian imperial project itself.; Signed by Author . 0521765935 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
