199543004Oxford University Press. 1995. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. DJ has light shelfwear. Stapled offprint of book review tipped in.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 208 pages; According to legend Aspasia of Miletus was a courtesan the teacher of Socrates and the political adviser of her lover Pericles. Next to Sappho and Cleopatra she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day. . 0195087127 . Oxford University Press hardcover

2007130046
Meletemata Series No. 49. In English. Soft cover 24 cm 364 pp.; net weight 835 gr.

Over the past decades studies devoted to the prosopography and onomastic on of specific regions have become a valuable means for students of the ancient world seeking to attain a fuller knowledge of a society its composition and development over the centuries; and their importance seems even greater in cases where these societies exhibit distinctive features or where our knowledge of them remains only limited. This dimension was the main reason for writing a monograph devoted to the prosopography and onomasticon of Aegean Thrace; lying at the margins of the ancient Greek world though at the same time at a vital point where different cultures met and made contact this part of the north Aegean coast bounded by the lower course of the Nestos and Hebros rivers attracted peoples of different ethnological origins from an early date. Study of the personal names has much of value to offer for the society and history of the area: the origin of the colonists the presence of the former inhabitants the later sporadic settlement here of Macedonians and Romans and even matters relating to changes in naming habits or the appearance and dissemination of new religious beliefs. This objective and the nature of the material itself which with very few exceptions consists of names whose formation is clear and which are already known to scholarship largely dictated the social and historical rather than philological and linguistic approach adopted in this work. Invaluable experience in the assembling and study of the material was gained from my participation in the publication of the Greek and Latin inscriptions of Aegean Thrace recently completed by the north Greek programme of the Centre for Greek and Roman Antiquity under the direction of Prof. Louisa D. Loukopoulou and in collaboration with the XIX Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of Komotini. This work made it possible not only to assemble the onomastic material found in inscriptions from the region -which in Aegean Thrace as in most areas of the ancient world are a valuable source of relevant information- but also to check the readings at the primary level on the stone itself. .

IMPORTANT:

The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books. Very light shelfwear to DJ else Fine.; Cambridge Classical Studies; 0.8 x 8.7 x 5.5 Inches; 260 pages; Were acts of sex which we would call rape and regard as a criminal offence similarly regarded in classical Athens That is the main question posed in this book the first in-depth study of the topic ever to be undertaken. It considers the legal terminology for rape and discusses exactly what these different terms describe. It also examines literary stories where rape and/or seduction feature as plot devices and looks at different characters' responses to them. The book's presentation makes it accessible to a wider readership of non-classicists. . 0521800749 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
