199544716Oxford University Press. 1995. Softcover. Very Good. light foxing to top of textblock. Tiny chip to base of spine.; 454 pages; This is an exciting and entirely new synthesis combining anthropology political and social history and a close reading of central Greek texts to account for two of the most significant hallmarks in Homeric epic and Athenian tragedy: the representation of ritual and codes of reciprocity. Both genres are pervaded by these features yet each treats them in entirely different ways. In this book Seaford shows that these differences cannot be accounted for in merely literary terms but require a historical explanation. Challenging thoroughly lucid and at times controversial this lively and original work is the first to attempt to understand the development of early Greek literature from the perspective of state-formation. It should interest all those concerned with the literature and history of classical Greece. . 0198150369 . Oxford University Press paperback

"From 1943 to 1949 tens of thousands of Greek soldiers and guerrillas fought and slaughtered each other - as well as thousands of innocents - in a civil war of unrelenting and shocking savagery. In the wake of the Allied liberation of Greece from German occupation the fighting transformed into a full-scale civil war pitting the Communist insurgents against U.S.- and British-backed government forces. As a proxy war between the postwar superpowers the Greek Civil War became the first hot zone of the Cold War. 300p. bibliography.index. Basic Books hardcover

20017041The Johns Hopkins University Press. 2001. Hardcover. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Very minor shelfwear to DJ.; 208 pages; In 404 BCE the Peloponnesian War finally came to an end when the Athenians starved into submission were forced to accept Sparta's terms of surrender. Shortly afterwards a group of thirty conspirators with Spartan backing "the Thirty" overthrew the democracy and established a narrow oligarchy. Although the oligarchs were in power for only thirteen months they killed more than 5 percent of the citizenry and terrorized the rest by confiscating the property of some and banishing many others. Despite this brutality members of the democratic resistance movement that regained control of Athens came to terms with the oligarchs and agreed to an amnesty that protected collaborators from prosecution for all but the most severe crimes. The war and subsequent reconciliation of Athenian society has been a rich field for historians of ancient Greece. From a rhetorical and ideological standpoint this period is unique because of the extraordinary lengths to which the Athenians went to maintain peace. In Remembering Defeat Andrew Wolpert claims that the peace was "negotiated and constructed in civic discourse" and not imposed upon the populace. Rather than explaining why the reconciliation was successful as a way of shedding light on changes in Athenian ideology Wolpert uses public speeches of the early fourth century to consider how the Athenians confronted the troubling memories of defeat and civil war and how they explained to themselves an agreement that allowed the conspirators and their collaborators to go unpunished. Encompassing rhetorical analysis trauma studies and recent scholarship on identity memory and law Wolpert's study sheds new light on a pivotal period in Athens' history. . 0801867908 . 19876120Cambridge University Press. 1987. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Light shelfwear. Spine ends are slightly rounded. Gift inscription from author on ffep "For Professor Habicht with kind regards Gabriel Herman".; 224 pages; In this book Gabriel Herman offers a new interpretation of Greek xenia a term traditionally rendered as 'guest-friendship'. Drawing on contemporary literary sources and inscriptions as well as anthropology sociology and comparative evidence from other times he shows that xenia was a bond of fictitious kinship akin to godparenthood rather than a tie of hospitality or ordinary 'friendship'. Starting off from this proposition he develops a dynamic model of the formation of elite relationships and values. He explores the concepts of obligation and loyalty gift and bribe treason and patriotism and places the Greek city within a new context of power relations. This book which assumes no knowledge of Greek will be of interest to students and teachers of ancient history and classics. It will also appeal to social and political scientists.; Signed by Author . 0521325412 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
