199234973Cambridge University Press. 1992. Softcover. Very Good. Scholar's initial to inner cover Jenifer Neils.; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages . 0521421640 . 2009140267
Institute for Mediterranean Studies: Halcyon Days in Crete VI. A Symposium held in Rethymnon 13-15 January 2006. Soft cover 24 cm 438 pp.

The island of Crete was conquered by the Ottomans in the mid-seventeenth century and was their last significant and long-lasting conquest of territory not previously held. Ottoman Crete has in recent years attracted historians’ attention for a number of reasons among which two particularities related to broader themes in Ottoman history stand out: the institution of private landownership in 1670 in breach of the age-long tradition of the miri ‘state’ land system and the emergence of a large Muslim population mainly through the conversion of locals to Islam. The papers in this volume bring to light new archival narrative and epigraphic sources for Ottoman Crete and the Eastern Mediterranean and aspire to contribute to the exploration of these but also other themes: centre-periphery relations and administration of an insular province taxation agricultural production social life and culture.

.

.

==============================================================

IMPORTANT: The price does NOT include the shipping cost which depends on actual weight and destination. DJ spine torn at top and bottom DJ edges slightly shelfworn.; 310 pages; The district of Epiros in north-western Greece became an independent province following the Fourth Crusade and the dismemberment of the Byzantine Empire by the Latins in 1204. It retained its independence despite the recovery of Constantinople by the Greeks in 1261. Each of its rulers acquired the Byzantine titles of Despot from which the term Despotate was coined to describe their territory. They preserved their autonomy partly by seeking support from their foreign neighbours in Italy. The fortunes of Epiros were thus affected by the expansionist plans of the Angevin kings of Naples and the commercial interests of Venice. Until 1318 it was governed by direct descendants of its Byzantine founder. Thereafter it was taken over first by the Italian family of Orsini then conquered by the Serbians infiltrated by the Albanians and appropriated by an Italian adventurer Carlo Tocco. Like the rest of Byzantium and eastern Europe it was ultimately absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century. The Despotate of Epiros illuminates part of Byzantine history and of the history of Greece in the Middle Ages. . 0521261902 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
