199239009Cambridge University Press. 1992. Second Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has a couple of tiny tears. DJ spine is sunned. Pages very lightly tanned.; Volume V of the new edition of The Cambridge Ancient History encompasses the first Classic age of European civilization--the fifth century BC. This was the first and last period before the Romans in which great political and military power was located in the same place as cultural importance. This volume therefore is more narrowly focused geographically than its predecessors and successors and hardly strays beyond Greece. Athens is at the center of the picture both politically and culturally but events and achievements elsewhere are assessed as carefully as the nature of our sources allows. Two series of narrative chapters one on the growth of the Athenian empire and the development of Athenian democracy the other on the Peloponnesian War that brought them down are divided by a series of studies in which the artistic and literary achievements of the fifth century are described.; Cambridge Ancient History Series; 5; 6.5 X 2 X 9.25 inches; 620 pages . 052123347X . 200842478Edinburgh University Press. 2008. Hardcover. Very Good in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Underlining in pencil to a few pages. Very minor shelfwear.; Where did "democracy" come from and what was its original form and meaning Here Josiah Ober shows that this "power of the people" crystallized in a revolutionary uprising by the ordinary citizens of Athens in 508-507 B. C. He then examines the consequences of the development of direct democracy for upper-and lower-class citizens for dissident Athenian intellectuals and for those who were denied citizenship under the new regime women slaves resident foreigners as well as for the general development of Greek history. When the citizens suddenly took power into their own hands they changed the cultural and social landscape of Greece thereby helping to inaugurate the Classical Era. Democracy led to fundamental adjustments in the basic structures of Athenian society altered the forms and direction of political thinking and sparked a series of dramatic reorientations in international relations. It quickly made Athens into the most powerful Greek city-state but it also fatally undermined the traditional Greek rules of warfare. It stimulated the development of the Western tradition of political theorizing and encouraged a new conception of justice that has striking parallels to contemporary theories of rights. But Athenians never embraced the notions of inherency and inalienability that have placed the concept of rights at the center of modern political thought. Thus the play of power that constituted life in democratic Athens is revealed as at once strangely familiar and desperately foreign and the values sustaining the Athenian political community as simultaneously admirable and terrifying.; Edinburgh Readings On The Ancient World; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 368 pages . 0748625852 .
