Dustjacket is protected in mylar and taped down to boards.; Socrates is still an enigmatic figure of enormous importance in Western culture. This book introduces both some of Socrates' own problems and some of the problems about him. It seeks at the same time to advance new views arguments and information on Socrates' mission techniques ethics and later reception. Composed of new essays by different scholars some of them primarily Hellenists some philosophers it illustrates both the variety of Plato's literary portrayals of Socrates and the diversity of later and present-day approaches to him. "Socratic Questions" thus confronts the difficulties philosophical and biographical presented by dialogue such as "Protagoras and Crito" and by the "Apology of Socrates". 2001S9068Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou 2001. Brand new. Bilingual Greek / English illustrated edition. Folder 28 x 27 / 320 pp.; a CD with music and songs from various regions of Asia Minor is included in the case. Almost eighty years have passed since the Asia Minor Disaster 1922 which was such a tragically determining factor in the history of modern Hellenism. The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and Ephesus Publishing have decided to publish the present richly illustrated volume as the least we could do as an act of homage to the world of Asia Minor to those who lost their lives and to those who were uprooted from the land of their fathers. Smyrna a cosmopolitan city but with a large and prosperous Greek community is presented symbolically as representing all the Greeks of Asia Minor whose metropolis it was. The unique pictorial material used in this publication consists mainly of postcards but also photographs from important historical archives. The cards have been selected from a rich collection and indeed this may be the first time they have all been published together. Thus the reader can find a virtually complete picture of the Ionian capital since most of the individual pieces in the mosaic are presented in these pages. In addition a picture is provided of present-day Smyrna with photographs taken especially for this publication. The fact that this is essentially an art book does not mean that less attention has been paid to the texts. On the contrary the collaboration with the Centre for Asia Minor Studies has ensured the desired level of quality and endowed the work with an academic identity. 20028896Cambridge University Press. 2002. Softcover. Very Good. 264 pages; The warring Greek city-states of the classical period often found it advantageous to use slaves in their armed forces and to encourage rebellion or desertion among the slaves of their enemies. But since military service was highly esteemed while the state of slavery was despised classical Greek historians such as Herodotus Thucydides and Xenophon tended not to discuss slave participation in war. This book examines the actual role of slaves in war the neglect of it by historians and the reasons for this reticence. . 0521893909 . Cambridge University Press paperback

Oblong 8vo 15.2 x 24 cm; 20 pen and wash grey and bistre drawings heightened with white c. 115 x 150 mm with descriptive ms captions in Greek leaves slightly toned occasional spotting to margins but generally clean and fresh; contemporary brown half sheep over black pebble-grained boards cover title 'Antiquites Grecques' in gilt gilt dulled a little worn and rubbed with some loss to spine joints cracked but holding still a lovely example.
A very unusual sketchbook most likely compiled by a French draughstman as an architectural study of the Greek monuments they saw on their travels. The ruins are shown in their monumentality and decay in splendid isolation typical for the period before the sites were excavated.

Judging from the condition of the monuments we can date the drawings to between 1854 and 1857. The sketchbook itself was likely purchased in Greece with the drawings applied directly to the pages i.e. not bound later and then on the artist's return to France the binding was stamped with the title 'ANTIQUITÉS GRECQUES'.

Sketchbooks of Greek sites are much rarer than comparable ones of Italy partly to do with the Grand Tour or tourist trails stretching as a matter of course to Italy but much rarer to Greece owing to the dangers and challenges of Mediterranean travel and an apprehension amongst travellers in the decades following the Ottoman occupation.
Greece, c. 1854-57. hardcover
