Strong Impression Thick Heavy Ink Easily Felt By Hand On Laid Paper One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Giovanni Battista Also Giambattista Piranesi 1720 - 1778 Was An Italian Artist Famous For His Etchings Of Rome And Of Fictitious And Atmospheric "Prisons" Le Carceri D'invenzione. It Is Important To Look At His Contribution As An Archaeologist Which Was Acknowledged At The Time As He Had Been Elected To The London Society Of Antiquaries. His Influence Of Technical Drawings In Antiquarian Publications Is Often Overshadowed. He Left Explanatory Notes In The Lower Margin About The Structure And Ornament. Most Ancient Monuments In Rome Were Abandoned In Fields And Gardens. Piranesi Tried To Preserve Them With His Engravings. To Do This Piranesi Pushed Himself To Achieve Realism In His Work. A Third Of The Monuments In Piranesi's Engravings Have Disappeared And The Stucco And Surfacings Were Often Stolen Restored And Modified Clumsily. Piranesi's Precise Observational Skills Allow People To Experience The Atmosphere In Rome In The Eighteenth Century. Piranesi May Have Recognised His Role To Disseminate Remarkable Information Through Meaningful Images. He Became The Director Of The Portici Museum In 1751. Wikipedia.

unknown

1991447Cambridge University Press. 1991. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; In this innovative study James Whitley examines the relationship between the development of pot style and social changes in the Dark Age of Greece 1100-700 BC. He focuses on Athens where the Protogeometric and Geometric styles first appeared. He considers pot shape and painted decoration primarily in relation to the other relevant features - metal artefacts grave architecture funerary rites and the age and sex of the deceased - and also takes into account different contexts in which these shapes and decorations appear. A computer analysis of grave assemblages supports his view that pot style is an integral part of the collective representations of Early Athenian society. It is a lens through which we can focus on the changing social circumstances of Dark Age Greece. Dr Whitley's approach to the study of style challenges many of the assumptions which have underpinned more traditional studies of Early Greek art.; New Studies in Archaeology; 10.25 x 1 x 7.5 Inches; 245 pages . 0521373832 . 19926661Franz Steiner Verlag. 1992. Softcover. Very Good. 2 small Creases along spine. Signed by author to Christian Habicht on ffep.; Historia - Einzelschriften; 83 pages; A new and expanded text with translation of the best-known Spartan inscription Meiggs & Lewis no. 67 together with detailed epigraphical textual historical and economic commentaries. The new text is based on a fresh examination of the stone the diaries of early travellers who saw the stone when it was better preserved than it is today and a newly discovered fragment which adds Aiginetan and Chian exiles and individual Achaians and Spartans to the list of Sparta's war supporters. This new text enables the date of the inscription previously controversial to be fixed in the early years of the Peloponnesian War thereby shedding light on Spartan war-finance and Greek attitudes towards Athens in the 420s and providing a badly-needed fixed point for Laconian Epigraphy. The monograph also clarifies the meaning of the Greek words opheugoo ophugaso.; Signed by Author . 3515061479 . Franz Steiner Verlag paperback
