Xenophon of Athens c. 430 355/354 BC was a Greek military leader philosopher and historian. At the age of 30 he was elected as one of the leaders of the retreating Greek mercenaries the Ten Thousand who had been part of Cyrus the Younger's attempt to seize control of the Achaemenid Empire. As the military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge wrote "the centuries since have devised nothing to surpass the genius of this warrior". For at least two millennia it has been debated whether Xenophon was first and foremost a general historian or philosopher. For the majority of time in the past two millennia Xenophon was recognised as a philosopher. Quintilian in The Orator's Education discusses the most prominent historians orators and philosophers as examples of eloquence and recognises Xenophon's historical work but ultimately places Xenophon next to Plato as a philosopher. Today Xenophon is recognised as one of the greatest writers of antiquity. Xenophon's works span multiple genres and are written in plain Attic Greek which is why they have often been used in translation exercises for contemporary students of the Ancient Greek language. In the Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers Diogenes Laërtius observed that Xenophon was known as the "Attic Muse" because of the sweetness of his diction. Despite being born an Athenian citizen Xenophon came to be associated with Sparta the traditional opponent of Athens. Much of what is known today about the Spartan society comes from Xenophon's royal biography of the Spartan king Agesilaus and the Constitution of the Lacedaemonians. The sub-satrap Mania is primarily known through Xenophon's writings. Xenophon's Anabasis recounts his adventures with the Ten Thousand while in the service of Cyrus the Younger Cyrus's failed campaign to claim the Persian throne from Artaxerxes II of Persia and the return of Greek mercenaries after Cyrus's death in the Battle of Cunaxa. Xenophon wrote Cyropaedia outlining both military and political methods used by Cyrus the Great to conquer the Neo-Babylonian Empire in 539 BC. Anabasis and Cyropaedia inspired Alexander the Great and other Greeks to conquer Babylon and the Achaemenid Empire in 331 BC. The Hellenica continues directly from the final sentence of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War covering the last seven years of the Peloponnesian War 431404 BC and the subsequent forty-two years 404362 BC ending with the Second Battle of Mantinea. Xenophon's writings on military strategies remain influential and are believed to be among the first to utilise and describe flanking manoeuvres and feints in military tactics. Wikipedia hardcover

This is Book Seven of Xenophon's Cyropaedia containing details of Cyrus the Great's expedition to Cyprus bound with Xenophon's short biography of Agesilaus II king of Sparta. Bound in original leather over boards with gilded double rule border on front and back with decorations in the corners. Spine contains five raised bands with filigree designs in five of the cells created and a red label with the title in the final cell. Overall covers are worn with rubbing and scuffing. Front cover reattached with a silk cloth. Marbled end papers with scuffing from the removal of a bookplate on pastedown. Full page frontispiece and fold out map prior to the text. Athens Xenophon was a philosopher and a military leader of ancient Greece born in Erchia near Athens around 430 BC and died around 355 BC In addition to the Anabasis he wrote a sequel to the history of the war of the Peloponnesus of Thucydides called Les Helléniques. His historical work is impartial according to Lucien of Samosata one of the authors that Xenophon has inspired native of the deme of Erchia in Attica Xenophon is son of Gryllos. His date of birth is discussed: the approximate date of 430 BC is based on the indication that he was a young man at the beginning of the Anabasis. Some authors propose more specific dates. E. Delebecque offers the date of 426 BC corresponding to the minimum age to participate in the Athenian expedition in Lesvos in 428 BC/427 BC according to historian Claude Mossé. Born into a wealthy aristocratic family he attended the Sophists including Prodicus in Thebes; Disciple of Socrates he portrays his master as a man more interested in morality and logic than by metaphysics as this appears in the apology of Socrates the memorable and the Banquet he became a pupil of Socrates. Penetrated with oligarchic ideas he is hostile to the restoration of democracy after the tyranny of Trente; in the midst of the Socratic he doesn't get along with Aristippus or Plato who he accused to add their ideas to those of Socrates. Sarah Fielding 1710-68 was the sister of Henry Fielding and a friend of Samuel Richardson and of Jane Collier. She was the author of several novels the best-known of which is The Adventures of David Simple a Moral Romance 1744. She was "…one of the earliest of the English novelists to explore with close attention varying states of feeling and the roots of motive" Oxford Companion to English Literature. She was a woman of considerable learning and her translation of Xenophon is highly regarded. The D.N.B. notes that it includes some notes and possibly a revision by James Harris of Salisbury the author of Hermes. It was published by subscription at Bath where Fielding spent her final years. In a note to the preface Fielding defends her use of the word "Memoir" for the title of the book citing the entry in Johnson's Dictionary and Elizabeth Carter's use of the word presumably in her translation of Epictetus.</p> Printed by C.
