BALDACCI, botanico, geografo, etnologo, appassionato del mondo balcanico, compì numerose spedizioni scientifiche in Montenegro, Albania, Epiro e Creta. Fra il 1916 e il 1920 Baldacci ricoprì numerosi incarichi di prestigio e responsabilità: fu consulente civile della Ia Divisione navale e coordinatore degli informatori speciali a Valona per conto del Ministero della Marina (1916-1917), ispettore generale del Lloyd Triestino sulla piazza di Roma, direttore interinale dell'Agenzia generale di Roma, dirigente del Servizio di Pubblicità nel Regno per il medesimo Lloyd (1919-1920), capogruppo della Sezione Coloniale presso l'Ufficio storiografico della mobilitazione (1918). Partecipò al movimento fiumano e tra il 1921 e il 1922 stabilì intensi e frequenti contatti con Gabriele D'Annunzio e personaggi a lui vicini, allo scopo di organizzare un'azione militare sulle coste del Montenegro per ottenere l'indipendenza del paese, che nel 1918 fu unito al Regno dei Serbi, Croati e Sloveni. "The celebrated account of the late Victorian traveller who became a legend in her own lifetime through her extraordinary travels in the Balkans. Born in 1863, the daughter of a distinguished surgeon, Edith Durham began her career as an artist and illustrator. Following her doctor's orders after an illness and depression, she sailed to Montenegro and began a life-long love affair with the Balkans. In a letter she writes, "It occurred to me that the vexed question of Balkan politics might be solved by studying the manners and customs of each district, and so learning to whom each place should really belong." Thus she cheerfully started on her expeditions that, she was well aware, ignored the intrigues of the Great Powers who were actively encouraging the dismemberment of the Turkish Empire. This is a passionate and flamboyant account of her travels, particularly in the mountainous terrain of northern Albania, where she cut a strange figure in her waterproof skirt and Scotch plaid golf cape but won the trust of the people there."
