Henry Hussey 1825-1903 'evangelist millenarian printer and historian' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' by 1850 was established as a printer. He later became a successful publisher and bookseller. He was secretary to George Fife Angas from 1865 and compiled his biography which was edited by Edwin Hodder and published in 1891 under Hodder's name as was the 1893 two-volume 'History of South Australia'. The 22 of 36 pages on the Australian colonies devoted to his home state are based on personal experience. Ferguson 10702: 'The title adequately describes the other stages of his journey. 'These papers are written solely for private distribution amongst relatives and special friends; and as my family is rather numerous and dispersed the necessity arises of having them printed'. That being said copies of this original printing are now rare nearly a century and a half later. <p>Marshall MacDermott 1791-1877 arrived in Adelaide in 1846 and after nearly three worthy and earnest decades here penned these memoirs decidedly brief when it comes to Australian content. Up until page 35 he reminiscences about his 22 years in the British army. He chose Western Australia as his future residence and arrived there in June 1830. Over the last eighteen pages he recounts his six years on the land and ten years in banking in WA then his eleven years 'as a bank manager three years as a merchant; four years in Parliament . and lastly over ten years administering the laws in Local Courts' in SA. In September 1864 Goode moved his premises from 155 Rundle St. to number 69. He also built up a lucrative trade in photographic material including chemicals that were "made to his special order and suitable for use in a hot climate". "In September 1865 Goode took his camera to the top of the partly-constructed Albert Tower. and the "following month Goode again went to the top of the Albert Tower but this time he had a stereoscopic camera." Octavo xvi 307 pages with 56 illustrations mainly full-page wood-engravings versos blank plus 2 large folding maps one a chromolithographic geological map. Brown cloth slightly rubbed; extremities a little rubbed; light wear to the head of the joints and the corners with the bottom two bumped; short repaired tear and a crease to the foot of the title leaf as a result of a production flaw; tears to the large folding map expertly repaired; a very good copy internally barely touched. In this second edition 'a few small inaccuracies are corrected and one or two passages relating to the Jubilee Exhibition it was proposed to hold in Adelaide are omitted . A few illustrations are added in connection with the chapters on the Aborigines and the Fauna'. In fact three plates are deleted from the first edition numbers 18 25 and 46 in that list and ten new plates appear in this edition numbers 2 4 16 27 and 42-47. Plates 42-47 are wood-engraved versions by J. Bruer of plates that first appeared in Taplin's 'The Folklore Manners Customs and Languages of the South Australian Aborigines' 1879. <p>There are portraits of Wewat-thaleri and Waldaninyeri in Taplin these were original albumen paper photographs and four illustrations based on original artwork by Aboriginal artists - 'War Dance' by an unknown artist and 'Hunting Scene' 'Hunting Party' and 'Group of Animals' all by Yertabrida Yertebrida Solomon. In Taplin these four plates are lithographs and we suggest that Bruer has based his wood-engravings on the Taplin versions not on the original artwork. <p>The erratum at the foot of the list of illustrations notes that the attribution of 'Hunting Party' to Solomon has been omitted. A lovely mezzotint engraved portrait of the Queen 1792 - 1849 dressed in widow's garb following the death of her husband King William IV of England. The capital city of the Australian state of South Australia was named in honor of the Queen when it was founded in 1836. South Australia was formed under the Act for the Colonization of South Australia of 1834 and was intended to be a haven of civil and religious liberties. The portrait of the Queen is a charming one; she gazes steadily out her hair in braids with a black lace veil over her head and around her shoulders. Engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall 1811 - 1867 engraver to Queen Victoria and based on the painting by William Charles Ross 1794 - 1860. 13 1/2 x 17 1/2". Four albumen photographs of Sydney all with the Charles Bayliss blind stamp. <br /> Charles Bayliss 1850 - 1897 one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views often with people and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time.<br /> These four images are mounted on a page from an album with handwritten captions in black ink. The first photograph "Sydney Harbor NSW" is a view looking over rooftops toward the harbor and tall masted ships moored and docked; and "Sydney Observatory" looking up toward the building from a lower vantage point; both with handwritten labels laid down and with the C. Bayliss stamp at the lower left. On the verso are "Botanical Gardens Sydney" which shows an entrance gate with an open doorway and view into the garden at the right and "Nepean River NSW" with a view across the river to cliffs on the far side are blind stamped at the lower right "C. Bayliss Photo Copyright". Album page 9 x 11 1/2"; each photograph 7 x 4 1/2". Album page chipped at corners; photographs very good condition. unknown
