Carte de visite showing the Australian General Tom Thumb aka John David Armstrong who made his debut in Melbourne in 1870 and performed world wide. An uncommon image with Tom Thumb standing next to an ornately carved chair and dresser dressed in coat and tails and holding a sheaf of papers. The visit of the American Charles Stratton "Tom Thumb" and his wife Lavinia to Australia in the late 1860s as part of the PT Barnum round the world tour resulted in a huge fascination with little people worldwide. With the title below the photograph. Text on the verso: "this photograph is from the studio of G. A. Graham 8 Mersea Road. With photographers imprint: Oldham & Angle Photographers 11 Queen St. & 8 Mersea Rd. Colchester". Below the stamp: "The higher class photographs only taken by Sydney B. 1883208551883. Very good overall. An interesting hand painted and roneoed ship's musical program. Produced for an Australian ship voyage 29th November 1883 with the proceeds of the performance "devoted to the relief of the suffering of a destitute and invalided steerage passenger". <br /> <br /> The evenings proceedings are roneographed inside the fold. It lists 15 performances including arrangements for violin and piano; a "letter song: Rip Van Winkle"; other songs a recitation; "Italian boat song"; and a vocal duet. The performers include Mr. & Mrs. Rignold and Signor Steffani. Mr. & Mrs. G. Rignold are recorded as having traveled from Adelaide to Sydney on 29th January 1883 on the ship "Birksgate" and in October 1886 they traveled on the ship "Hanroto" from Hobart to Melbourne with Mr. & Mrs. Lohr all of them described as "Theatrical". Signor Steffani is listed in the Sand's Sydney Directory for 1883 at 129 Phillips St. and in 1895 as a "teacher of singing" at 56 Elizabeth St. ancestry dot com. In fact the performances by "professionals" were most likely money making efforts for the performers who traveled repeatedly between various ports in Australia. One wonders if the money collected actually went to relieve the suffering of "a destitute and invalided steerage passenger" unless that is Mr. Rignold or Mr. Steffani. <br /> <br /> The R. M. S. John Elder made voyages between London and Australia see article in the Sydney Morning Herald referring to arrival from London on 15 July 1885 just 6 months after this voyage on the NLA website. It seems possible that this voyage was only in Australian waters as the Rignold's were already in Australia in January 1883. <br /> <br /> The cover of the program is hand painted with a background design of gingko leaves daffodils and a dragon fly with a tropical island view superimposed. On blue coated paper folded with the number 1 penciled at lower left of the front. In some spots the text of the reproduction is faded and it has been re-written by hand in purple ink. Short closed tear bottom edge. Folded folio 8 3/4 x 13 1/2". The paper is speckled with white dots akin to some unusual sort of bleaching perhaps related to the paper making process as it skirts the cover illustration. <br /> <br /> An unusual survival. unknown

A very large engraved chart in two sheets combined printed surface 1019 × 1270 mm overall total size 1040 × 1300 mm with minimal hand-colouring mounted together on the original blue backing paper with the publisher's title-label on the verso. Mild creasing and a little uneven tanning; bottom right-hand corner tip containing portion of the wide printed border and title-label on the rear expertly reattached; top left-hand corner-tip missing; a few short marginal tears sealed; a few chips to the edges; in very good condition. A large blueback chart of part of the coastline of New South Wales with eight inset charts: Port Jackson; Twofold Bay; Jervis Bay; Bateman Bay; Botany Bay and Port Hacking; Broken Bay; Newcastle Harbour; and Port Stephens. Lighthouses are highlighted with small spots of red and yellow colouring. <p>The imprint below the bottom border indicates that the chart incorporates corrections to November 1883; the publisher's 1884 inkstamp appears below the title. Original flush-cut dark green cloth with the short title in gilt on the front cover; cloth lightly marked and rubbed at the extremities with slight wear in a couple of places; spine a little sunned; inner hinges cracked but firm; endpapers a little marked with some scuffing and silverfish damage to the front flyleaf; small stain to the bottom edge bleeding very slightly into some bottom margins; very occasional foxing; three smallish areas on pages 167-70 lost to silverfish with two patches affecting some 25 words of text now supplied on an insert; a very good copy. A note dated January 1879 in pencil on the flyleaf gives some details of the anonymous author a cousin of the somewhat more famous Victor. Ferguson 10643 recording only 'blue morocco cloth boards'. 'By 1866 a ravaging northern drought accelerated the need to succour bush workers who were often victims of their own excesses and were preyed upon between jobs. Hugo pressed for a "bushmen's home" like a seamen's home as a quiet sober refuge. Opposition came from those who saw it as a squatters' movement but his canvassing bushmen's subscriptions and philanthropic support enabled the home to open in Whitmore Square Adelaide in May 1870' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. After an inconclusive return in NSW an amended bill was reintroduced and carried by all of the eastern colonies in 1899. Western Australia voted in 1900. The document lays out the terms for the formation of the Australian Parliament Judiciary Executive Government the Crown the States and other matters relating to the Federation of Australia in 1904. 'Shortly after the return of Mr Goyder's surveying expedition to Adelaide in April 1870 my father was appointed Government Resident of the Northern Territory'; 16 year-old Harriet accompanied William Bloomfield Douglas see the 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' and the rest of the family north. She spent the better part of the next three years in the Territory returning south for her marriage in 1871 to a nephew of the late Governor before leaving for good in 1873 when her father was dismissed for incompetence. Her chatty account based on her personal experiences concludes then at page 208; the rest of the book is written 'by means of researches in newspapers official reports and other documents'. The location is unknown but there is a rather large lake and the town has a goodly collection of stone buildings approximately sixteen properties with some two story homes and a couple of elongated buildings. <br /> <br /> There is a magnificent group shot of 4 men posing with their guns tent and dog. Their tucker bag is hanging in the tree and a lake with rowboat is behind them; the town view with a main street; a bush scene with a lake and a fellow standing beside his tent; a view of gum trees with a seated man taking aim a terrier & a lake behind him; a detailed view of the tent with two shotguns perched in front; two bush scenes and two beside the rather large lake. A bit of light scattered foxing otherwise quite bright. Nine cabinet cards images approx. 6 1/4 x 4 3/8" mounted on slightly larger stiff card no photographer listed. unknown

1875ABC_48856Sydney 1875. Ca. 8 x 46.5 cm. Panorama photograph consisting of three albumen prints joined together with white bookcloth. A long folding panorama photograph of Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century. It prominently features the east side of Circular Quay which at the time was a commercial working wharf dominated by the wool trade. The many wool stores that were built here have since been demolished. The large wool store of Hill Clark and Co at the end of the wharf which was completed in 1883 cannot be found on the photograph which means it must have been taken in 1882 at the latest. The photograph is not signed but is reminiscent of the work of Australian photographers Charles Bayliss 1850-1897 and Francis Whitfield Robinson ca. 1819-after 1882 who made similar panorama photos of Sydney around this time.The photograph is slightly discoloured one of the bookcloth hinges is partly torn. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover

Original plain cream cloth with an orange paper title-label on the front cover; cloth a little stained and a little worn at the extremities with minor loss to the corners and spine; four small areas of the rear cover a little indented each with two short parallel cuts to the cloth; two conjugate leaves pages 85/86 and 107/108 torn out and screwed up at some stage were later repaired and reinserted with clear tape which stained the paper and have recently been expertly restored; rear free endpaper torn away leaving just a small attached fragment; a few other minor signs of age and use; overall a decent copy with the contemporary ownership details of A.L. Young ink-stamped and as 'A. Lincoln Young' written in ink on the front cover front and rear pastedowns and front free endpaper and added to the foot of the Adelaide directory with his address 25 Royal Exchange written there and on the front cover. The Adelaide directory listing name occupation and address runs to 47 pages; the Port Adelaide one is seven pages long. Considering the colony was founded barely two decades earlier it is an extensive yet unpretentious list. For example the four entries under MANN in Adelaide are 'Joseph carpenter Brown street J. bonnet maker Brown street Elizabeth mangle woman Gouger street His Honour Judge Sturt street'. At the foot of the calendar page for each month there are notes under the headings 'Garden' 'Flower Garden' Fruit Trees' and 'Field' on average about 12 lines each month. Ferguson 10603 not noting the preliminaries or the map; not recording any details of the binding. The State Library of NSW has a copy on Trove not recording the presence of the preliminaries or the 36 pages of advertisements but noting the dimensions of the map as 220 × 100 mm. 'The following Papers are reprinted from "The Farm" section of the Melbourne "Leader". The writer left Melbourne on 1st September 1874 and returned on the 30th November. The early Papers were written during September in which month the country round Adelaide is seen at its very best. The areas of Gawler Kapunda Kooringa Hill River Estate Clare and surroundings were visited during October and the return journey between Adelaide and Mount Gambier including Strathalbyn Willunga Goolwa Hindmarsh Island Narracoorte and the Drainage Country took place during November' preface. The critical comments on contemporary vine cultivation and wine production make interesting reading. Visits were made to properties and individuals well-known to this day: Davenport Boothby Crompton Auld Mrs Penfold Thomas Elder and Birksgate Thomas Hardie sic and Bankside and 'Clare - Seven Hills and St. Aloysius' College' with numerous 'Notable Wine Growers' in the region mentioned. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen. Jahrgang 1872 Tafel 22' is printed in the top margin outside the printed border. 'Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen' Petermann's Geographical Communications founded by August Heinrich Petermann in 1855 ceased publication only as recently as 2004. It was 'the oldest German-language journal for geography in which all major geographical discoveries of the 19th and 20th centuries were published' Wikipedia. About J.M. Gilmore we have unearthed nothing and when even such an indefatigable bibliographer as Ian McLaren doesn't record him you're definitely made a discovery. The map is much more informative. Gilmore made two trips in the Channel Country in south-west Queensland one in January to March 1871 the other in September-October 1871. The routes are marked in red on the map. Drop-title; small notches and tiny pinholes in the inner margins where bound now disbound; tiny nick to the top edge throughout with the top margin of the first page of the first report slightly discoloured; overall in excellent condition. South Australian Parliamentary Papers Number 53 53A 54 and 54A of 1883-84; only 670 copies of each of the last three reports were published. Although these reports are numbered consecutively the periods covered are the last quarter of 1882 and the last three quarters of 1883; there is no report for the first quarter of 1883 probably because of the departure of the long-serving Government Resident Edward Price in that period. <p>The usual pastoral mining and agricultural reports are enlivened in the last paper by Acting Government Resident Gilbert McMinn's detailed account of his success in finding Stuart's marked tree at his last camp near the mouth of the Mary River. This discovery removed 'the last shadow of doubt in connection with the great explorer's achievement' brought on by Stuart's mistaken belief that he was following the Adelaide River.
