Original quarter contrasting red and green cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover; covers a little rubbed and bumped at the extremities with minor restoration to the joints and slight wear to the head of the spine; cloth a little marked and flecked; front flyleaf a well-matched replacement; first and last leaves offset; occasional light scattered foxing; a very good copy. A rarity: we have handled only four copies in over 46 years and this is a parochial publication. Ernst Bernhard Heyne 1825-1881 botanist and horticulturist 'was a prodigious writer. Though overshadowed by von Mueller his botanical and horticultural work greatly contributed to the early development of the two colonies' of Victoria and South Australia 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' making a rare error in not recording accurately this edition. Ferguson 10397; Crittenden 53 with a lengthy commentary on its importance. The first edition was published as 'The Fruit Flower and Vegetable Garden' in 1871 Ferguson 10396 recording only one copy; Crittenden 47 'not sighted'; Trove records only 15 copies of all five editions from the first of 1871 to the facsimile reprint of the third of 1979. Gilt-pictorial cloth lightly marked and rubbed with the rear cover lightly scuffed; top edge lightly foxed; stitching slightly cracked at one opening with a few adjacent gatherings now slightly proud of the edges; essentially a fine copy. The 'country the habits and customs as well as the beliefs of the Wonkonguru and their neighbours east of Lake Eyre . For the last eight or nine years Mr Aiston has dwelt at Mungeranie although more than twenty years he has spent in aborigines' haunts . Above all an incalculable debt of gratitude is due to Sir Baldwin Spencer who not once but several times read through and corrected the manuscript'. Provenance: Sir John Burton Cleland 1878-1971 with his contemporary ownership signature in pencil J.B. Cleland on the front flyleaf. Cleland pathologist and naturalist began 'a systematic study of what must be one of the largest series of meticulous autopsy examinations ever conducted by one person - over 7000. Cleland regarded each post-mortem examination as a voyage of discovery and never wearied continuing to do routine autopsy work into his mid-80s . He had an unrivalled experience in macroscopic morbid anatomy and histopathology and often diagnosed rare conditions almost at a glance. With each further 1000 autopsy records amassed he would analyse and epitomize his findings and publish them in the "Medical Journal of Australia" or the Royal Adelaide Hospital's "Medical and Scientific Archives" which he founded and edited in 1921-48' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The map embraces the entire extent of the Nullarbor Plain within South Australia covering 'an area of 16500 square miles . with a complete description of the country from the coast to the route taken by Mr Ernest Giles on his exploration trip to Perth'. It also includes 'Professor Tate's track shewn in red' presumably relating to Ralph Tate's travels there resulting in his lengthy paper The Natural History of the Country around the Head of the Great Australian Bight in the 'Transactions . of the Philosophical Society of Adelaide South Australia for 1878-9': see McLaren 15803. The journal 'gives a minutely detailed description of the country passed over . It will be seen that this hitherto comparatively unexplored country has been thoroughly examined. I found that in many important particulars the surmises in previous reports respecting this country were not borne out'. No less interesting is the account of the discovery of the waggon and last campsite of Fairie and Woolley who died of thirst north of Eucla two years earlier. South Australian Parliamentary Paper Number 67 of 1875; the subtitle is 'Memo. - This Journal and the Plan accompanying it was placed at the disposal of the Government by the Hon. Thos. Elder MLC at whose expense the exploration was made'. The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' gives details of Ross' interesting life: born in 1817 he joined Charles Bonney in the first cattle drive from the Goulburn River to Adelaide; after numerous adventures he was appointed leader of the advance exploration party for the overland telegraph line becoming in the process only the second to complete the crossing of the continent through the centre. 'At 57 Ross was engaged by Elder to lead an expedition to explore west of the Peake and to go on to Perth. Struggling against sandhills and mulga scrub he reached the South Australian border but barren country and brackish water forced him back'. His last words in this published account are: 'One drink or rain to give the horses one drink would have saved the expedition'. Ross died in poverty in Adelaide in 1903. Offered together with a companion volume by Ruskin bound to match and in excellent condition: 'The Seven Lamps of Architecture' 'Sunnyside' Orpington Kent George Allen 1886 fifth edition/ 1849; quarto ii xiv 222 pages plus 14 plates featuring artwork by John Ruskin. <p>'When George Allen 1832-1907 joined John Ruskin's evening drawing classes at the Working Men's College in 1854 he was working as an apprentice carpenter for his uncle in Clerkenwell London. Enthused and encouraged by Ruskin who saw in him an "innate disposition to art" Allen declined employment with William Morris' decorative arts firm in order to devote himself to Ruskin's service as his assistant and most reliable engraver. From 1870 he also became Ruskin's publisher and in 1874 he built "Sunnyside" a large house in Orpington Kent which acted as a storage area for Ruskin's past works and future publications up to the "Library Edition" of 1903-12 completed by Allen's family' online information from an exhibition commemorating George Allen held at Lancaster University. <p>Provenance: Bishop Arthur Nutter Thomas 1869-1954 Anglican Bishop of Adelaide from 1906 until 1940. The front flyleaf in each volume is inscribed in ink: 'Jeremie Septuagint Prize: December 1892 Arthur N. Thomas Pemb: Coll: Camb.' The 'Australian Dictionary of Biography' records that 'At Pembroke College University of Cambridge B.A. 1893; M.A. 1895; D.D. 1906 he gained a first in the classical tripos 1891 and won the Jeremie Septuagint 1892 and Carus Greek Testament 1893 prizes; he was also an active sportsman'. 2 items. An early compendium here in the preferred binding of elaborately gilt-blocked green cloth of works already scarce at the time; the lithographs and the lengthy 34-page introduction by Woods were new to this edition. <p>Not commonly known is that Taplin's substantial contribution 'The Narrinyeri' 156 pages plus 6 preliminaries is the text of the revised edition of 1878 see his informative preface dated 12 April 1878 at page xliii. The Wyatt contribution was not previously published as such; the text here was 'principally extracted from his official reports' stemming from his relatively short and unhappy time as the third South Australian Protector of the Aborigines from 1837 to 1839 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The contributions by Meyer Schuermann Gason and Bennett first appeared in 1846 1846 1874 and 1869 respectively. Colour-pictorial card covers featuring Roy Nockolds artwork with colour illustrations on the inside panels; covers lightly rubbed with a short crease to the front top corner; an excellent copy internally fine. Donald Campbell has signed his portrait printed on the first page done at a book launch in Adelaide at the time. <p>The 1963 World Land Speed Record attempt at Lake Eyre was abandoned when a 20-year drought broke and the lake was flooded; a successful attempt was made the following year. Most of the illustrations relate to the construction of the Bluebird-Proteus CN7 vehicle used in both attempts. <p>Offered together with an original gelatin silver photograph 191 × 236 mm of a group of seven men leaning on or standing near the vehicle on the salt pan at Lake Eyre. The photograph was taken by Leonard George Gallagher employed at the time by the Weapons Research Establishment in Adelaide; he was at Lake Eyre as part of the Commonwealth Government's contribution to the record attempt. He was not an official photographer but he produced a unique album for his own benefit which we sold some years ago. This print has a few creases; a better example of it was present in the album. Original navy blue textured cloth blocked in gilt and blind with the large kangaroo illustration on the front covers particularly striking; all edges uncut; covers a little bumped and marked with slight wear at the extremities and the spines a little tanned; trifling signs of age and use; overall an excellent set with the armorial bookplate of Edward Bennett on both front pastedowns and a very small inkstamp 'Knox Collection' on the verso of both title pages. An adventurous tourist's travels in Australia in the late 1850s and early 1860s 'A detailed description of the South Eastern part of Australia including station properties social conditions travel aborigines etc.' according to Ferguson but there's much more . In the second volume pages 233-50 Jessop records meeting two men at Wilpena 'on their way back to Adelaide with the results of a private exploration. The leader or scout was named Giles who was engaged by Mole a man of more energy than money to assist him in opening up some new part . They finally left the known country at Angipena and entered upon the unknown in the direction of north-west . They were absent about a month from Angipena and altogether going and coming passed over 1200 miles'. <p>The meeting is recorded in some detail not least regarding contact with the Aborigines 'Giles said he was the first person in the Colony that vaccinated a black and that it happened on this occasion'. Wantrup notes that this expedition 'does not appear to be elsewhere recorded and dates at least ten years before Giles's career became a matter of public record. Jessop supplies no precise date but from the context it is clear that the expedition took place in the first half of 1859. Constituting the first appearance in print of the last of the great Australian explorers it is well worth adding to an exploration library'. <p>Wantrup 2023 pages 346-7; not in McLaren; see Ferguson 10938-41. 2 items. The original gelatin silver photographs are uniformly mounted on 'The Rose Stereographs' cards with the pair of images printed as one plate 86 × 144 mm; card size 98 × 178 mm with printed captions within each image. All captions commence with the words 'The American Fleet in Australia'. The broken top right-hand corner of one card is held in place with clear tape just touching the top corner of the photograph; all other cards and photographs are in excellent condition. In August and September 1908 the American Grand Fleet which included 16 white-painted battleships visited Sydney and Melbourne during its 14-month world tour. 'George Rose visited both cities armed with his stereoscopic camera and went on board the USSs "Louisiana" and "Wisconsin" taking photographs. He produced exactly 100 views for sale #12800 to #12899 which were packaged as sets of 35 or 36 views in attractive green and gold boxes. Collectors find it difficult to find all the views as the box contents were a random selection with a bias towards the more attractive views and avoidance of shots that were similar' Ron Blum: 'George Rose Australia's Master Stereographer' 2022 fourth edition. Small gift inscription to top of Preface. Illustrated with eight black & white engravings and large fold-out map with neatly repaired tears at rear. 307 pages. Important account of the first expedition to cross from Alice Springs to Roebourne on the West Coast of Australia in 1872 Warburton left South Australia as leader of an expedition that included his son Richard and J. Lewis. It was financed and provided with seventeen camels and six months supplies by Sir Walter Hughes and Sir Thomas Elder and sought to link the province with Western Australia. After leaving Alice Springs in April 1873 they endured long periods of extreme heat with little water and survived only by killing the camels for meat. They reached the Oakover River with Warburton strapped to a camel. On 11 January 1874 they were brought to Charles Harper's de Grey station in northern Western Australia. They had conquered the formidable Great Sandy Desert to become the first to cross the continent from the centre to the west. Warburton was emaciated and blind in one eye; at a public banquet in Adelaide later he attributed their survival to his Aboriginal companion Charley. . 1st Edition. For 'the most part the result of seven years' personal observation in the Colony of South Australia and contains from this source detailed statements on the prospects of labourer and farmer on Agriculture Stock Farming Building Gardening Manufacturing in various branches . and Mining and Mineral Productions'. There are chapters on overlanding 31 pages and Aborigines 52 pages. Significantly this copy contains numerous contemporary annotations in pencil on 25 pages. Many of the comments are highly critical. A fine example is the first one in the book at the foot of the second page of the preface below the author's remarks about the 'capacities and kindliness of the new home which may await all who are desirous to emigrate to the splendid country and exquisite climate of South Australia'. Excuse me what about the 'Drawbacks - Scorching sun and hot winds clouds of dust millions of flies and fleas and moschettos and ants swarms of rogues and lying rascals plenty of Thieves - also high Rents and high price of food and a deprivation of luxuries & sometimes of the necessaries of life'. Several of the complaints relate to prices especially of food; one of them is dated 'vegetables we find very dear. Mar 1849'. The author finishes a few pages about fires thus: 'In a large plain covered with such materials and on fire there would be little chance of escape; and few lamentations would be allowed as death would be too instantaneous.
