Pictorial wrappers slightly worn at the extremities; an excellent copy. A pocket guide for the German-Australian shopper comprising a German-English section with pronunciation guide e.g. 'Aquarellfarben f. Watercolour wawtër-kulër' and an English-German section. Most of the numerous advertisements including for important South Australian stores are in German. The rear cover advertisement albeit in English says a lot about how far Australia has travelled in the past 75 years: 'If you need the assistance of an interpreter in your own language to help you in your shopping at John Martin's department store ask any assistant to direct you to our New Australian Shopping Bureau. here you will find practical service courteous attention and expert advice on your shopping requirements'.
The only institutional holding we can find is one copy in the State Library of South Australia. We have determined the date from the advertisement for the Singer Sewing Machine Co. on page 91: '100-jährige erfahrung in der herstellungs' the company was founded in 1851.
Otto Petainek appears to have been representative of the German-speaking migrants to South Australia from Central Europe in the post-war period many displaced by Communist regimes. We believe he was born in Budapest worked briefly on the South Australian railways and was naturalised as an Australian citizen in Sydney in 1957 as Otto von Petainek. Rigby Limited paperback
