Inscribed in the first volume by the author Prince Philippe le Comte de Paris the disputed "King of the French" who ruled for a mere 2 days after his grandfather Louis-Philippe was deposed in 1848. An historian and journalist Philippe joined the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War and rose to Adjutant General under George MacLellan during the first year before leaving for France in 1862. He ended up writing a seven volume history of the Civil War plus an accompanying atlas. This set is only the seven volume text. Green leather spine with marbled boards save volume 7 where the green has faded from the spine and the boards and endpapers differ from the others. Shelfworn. Issued by the Faculté de médecine de Paris it reports the successful symphysiotomy performed on Madame Souchot intended as an alternative to the Caesarean section in obstructed childbirth. The first section contains the proceedings of the Faculty printed in both Latin and French while the second part includes the memoir of Dr. Jean-René Sigault who described the procedure in detail and addressed its clinical application. Two works on English history by Matthew Paris both published from Paris' original manuscripts. The Historia Anglorum was written in 1250 compiled by Paris from his greater work a world history but including additional information. The history begins with William the Conqueror and concludes in 1253 during the reign of Henry III. The Abbreviato Chronicorum Angliae begins with the marriage of Ethelred in 1002 ending in 1252 with a continuation in another monk's hand to 1255. A photographic record of a young American man's tour of Europe and the Paris Exposition accompanied by many beautiful street images of Paris.<br /> <br /> The silver gelatin prints of Paris by the unidentified photographer include wonderful images of Notre Dame cathedral the Eiffel Tower the Opera House Toreador Palace the Church of the Madeleine the Champs Esys and the Arc de Triumph. There are many street scenes including the Rue de Rival L'Avenue de loper Place de la Republic monuments and architecture.<br /> <br /> The tour begins in Scotland and includes a departure at the train station wonderful shot of the train and passengers waiting on the platform as well as thatched roof cottages and gardens castles Edinburgh and London. It concludes with images of the main square in Brussels the Belgian country side and Holland including the iconic windmill shot. The final shot is on board ship the photographer with 2 fellow travelers looking very proud of himself.<br /> <br /> The album 8 x 6". Images 3 x 3 1/2" loosely inserted into card stock mounts. The Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 introduced marvels which would transform the 20th Century the Modern Age featuring diesel engines talking films escalators the first magnetic audio recorder called the telegraphone and the massive Ferris wheel spread over 543 acres featuring 83000 exhibitors. The compiler has included photos of the Porte Monumental the Pavilion of Nations the Palace of Decorative Arts Palace of Costumes & Textiles The Cambodian Pavilion the Cambodian pagoda the Chinese Pavilion the Palace of Electricity and many others. The images all retain a strong contrast and unlike many of the commercial images produced at the time often show wandering patrons or crowds or a focus on many of the exceptional Art Nouveau architectural details which ornamented the Exposition. The remainder of the album focuses on a September 1901 summer holiday trip to the beaches of Arromanches with scenes of fishing boats pulled up on the sand views of the headland birds-eye photo of the commune and town views. Arromanches would 43 later serve as the site of the Mulberry artificial harbor installations and the Normandy D-Day landings.
