183564027<p>aquatint RARE Splendid Costume view from 'Voyage Autour du Monde par les Mers de l'Inde et de la Chine de La Corvette de Sa Majesté La Favorite exécuté pendant les années 1830 1831 1832 pl. 66 sketched by Francois-Edmond Paris engraved by Sigismond Himely and under the direction of Louis Auguste de Sainson with Arthus Bertrand editeur. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic scientific and artistic means intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne 1805-1871 was a French painter maritime and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. He accompanied the French naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville 1790-1842 onboard the L'Astrolabe 1826-1829 Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace 1793-1875 on La Favorite 1830-1832 and Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant 1793-1858 on La Bonite 1836-1837. Sigismond Himely 1801-1872 was a mid 19th C. Swiss painter viewmaker acquaint engraver active in Paris known for his excellent aquatints. Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1877 was a French artist lithographer and engraver. He worked as a draughtsman on the Astrolabe in its circumnavigation of the globe in 1826-1829 and then spent almost 5 years to create the prints for the publication of its expedition narrative. Hebert "Terrain Jurassique dans le Bassin de Paris " 1857 88p. All in wraps and most but not all wraps are the original ones. No way to know when the binding was done but clearly not recently appears to be c. 1920. Good Plus binding quite secure no ownership marks. Cover not worn but lightly soiled and unevenly faded in color. Some light wear on papers with occasional foxing on tear chips on covers etc. Six articles bound in one hardcover volume: . hardcover

All issues pp. 8 although No. 1 has an additional two-page supplement. A typically Nesbit production humorous pugnacious partisan with his signed gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Green cloth somewhat flecked and soiled the front endpapers silverfished the first page of No. 5 soiled by similar vermin; otherwise very good if not near fine. hardcover

Provenance of 800 Franks. 12mo. Full leather binding with raised bands. Gold gilt decorations along spine and outer edges of boards. Red leather and gold gilt title block. Fore-edges of leaves are speckled red. Board edges are rubbed and most of gilt is rubbed away. Bottom corners are worn bumped and chipped so that some of the cardboard beneath shows. One bump on back board near top band of spine. Back free end page is torn along the bottom and missing a small piece. Overall this book is in excellent condition. xvi 588 4 pages. D17552Autograph diary written in pencil signed by Miss Elizabeth Woods of Bowling Green Kentucky. 135 pp. Well educated wealthy American woman's account of seeing Europe; mostly Paris France. Her Southern sensibilities were shocked at seeing a white woman at the same table with a black man. Turns out he was a minister from Haiti and the lady was his wife. Miss Woods saw the Paris Exposition several times; saw Sarah Bernhardt perform; saw President Kruger of South Africa; saw a street where Jews were not allowed to come out after 6pm; describes fancy balls and dinners; shopping for clothes.much of interest. Worn oil cloth binding. Numerous accounts of "charming" or "lovely" people. <br/><br/> hardcover

Owner's name stamp inside each volume. Tiny closed tear in front endpaper of volume 1. Inch-long puncture in spine of volume 2 not affecting the integrity of the binding. Back cover of volume 2 is vertically creased; milder crease in front cover of volume 4. Air bubbles under cloth on volume 3 which also has a small ink drip stain on the spine. Small nick in cloth on edge of volume 4's front cover. A few of the folding maps have closed tears but most are totally intact. Text unmarked and binding tight across the set. Very good condition overall. An important contemporary account of the American Civil War by a prince of the deposed House of Orleans a grandson of Louise Philippe of France. Philippe le Comte de Paris came to the United States to volunteer for the Union Army in 1861 where he served on the staff of General McClellan until July 1862. He later returned to Europe where he was floated as a potential candidate for restoration of the monarchy in France. However he spent much of his later life in exile in the United Kingdom. This four-volume history is complete with numerous folding maps of Civil War battlefields and forts. This edition published across 1875-1888. Porter & Coates hardcover
