188363193
EXTREMELY RARE - almost impossible to find as a separate print. View from 'Album pittoresque d'un voyage autour du monde exécuté par ordre du gouvernement français…' Picturesque Album of a Voyage Around the World Executed by Order of the French Government. Gravures dessinées par L'Amiral Paris. Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.

The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition. Textured beige softcovers raised & embossed gilt lettering front cover black lettering for Leon Claude minor chipping head & foot of spine edgewear some scuffing still a VG copy w/ the fashion plates in bright condition. First edition of this very scarce and beautifully printed fashion design magazine from the mid 1930s produced by the publishing house which also published fashion publications such as Paris Chic La Coquette and Le Gout Parisien. These designs show the dominant influence of Elsa Schiaparelli’s fashions in the 1930s as she continued Chanel’s idea of comfortable jackets but with the emphasis on beautiful tailoring. The designs here include most in 3/4 length with some sporting shapes and belted jackets as well as fancy wraps made from leopard panther kid-astrakhan Buenos broadtail lamb beaver otter Persian lamb musk mink fox and others. The collars are voluminous and flaring all the way around and the linings are often chosen to complement and match the dresses worn by the models. These 1930s fashions show a dramatic drop in hem lengths the new French beret style hats worn at an angle and designs which inspired the Hollywood glamor look of the era popularized by Joan Crawford Carole Lombard and others. The designs are glamorous and chic with many having geometric patterns and reflecting the Art Deco influence. These fashion designs were issued only to subscribing specialty shops boutiques and fashion enthusiasts at the time with eight different issues on assorted subjects appearing annually. 198122934
New York:: The Limited Editions Club 1981. Limited Edition. A Fine tight copy without the glassine cover in a Fine slipcase. One of 2000 numbered copies and signed by both Cowley and photographer Bernice Abbott. Original prospectus laid-in. Malcolm Cowley's Exile's Return was first published in 1934 by Viking Press. Subtitled "A Literary Odyssey of the 1920s" the book explores the development of literature in the early twentieth century. Cowley's work includes his own personal narratives about his relationships with many of the best writers from the start of the century. Exile's Return is particularly concerned with the movement of these authors out of America after the Great War and then back again in the 1920s. This work leads up to the 1930s and allows us to see how the 30s understood their preceding decades. The adventures and attitudes shared by the American writers dubbed "The Lost Generation" are brought to life here by one of the group's most notable members. As Cowley details in this intimate anecdotal portrait in renouncing traditional life and literature they expanded the boundaries of art.
The Limited Editions Club, hardcover
