Illuminated Manuscript Bible Leaf - Prologue to Isaiah

007095France 1250. No Binding. Very Good. Illuminated manuscript on vellum; 160 x 115 mm. Double column 46 lines in minute Gothic Textualis. A fine leaf from a mid 13th-century Paris pocket Bible written on thin high-quality vellum in an exceptionally small and regular Gothic Textualis typical of the Paris university book trade. The text comprises part fo the Prologue to the Book of Isaiah Incipit prologus in Ysaiam prophetam a standard Paris recension prologue introducing the prophetic books. The layout is in two columns of 46 lines ruled in very light plummet. The script is a highly compressed Parisian Gothic bookhand with characteristic biting curves diamond-shaped puncti and minimal ascenders and descenders. The leaf is decorated with a handsome HISTORIATED intitial "I" the opening letter of the prologue extending the full length of the column. The initial is painted in deep blue and ochre with white tracery containing the half-length figure of a prophet very likely Isaiah holding a scroll. A full-height bar border extends into the lower and upper margins with foliate terminals in blue red and gold. A delicate pen-flourished column divider in alternating blue and red runs between the text columns a hallmark of Paris workshops active during the third quarter of the 13th-century. Several rubricated initials and guide letters in red and blue provide internal textural structure in accordance with Paris Bible standards. The leaf exemplifies the commerical production of small-format Bibles for students and mendicant friars a format that spread from Paris throughout Europe after ca. 1225. Its combination of minute script disciplined ruling and elegant but economical decoration places it within the Paris book trade comparable to work associated with Maitre du Psautier de Saint-Louis and other Paris ateliers. Vellum is lightly toned with expected handling wear; minor cockling at edges; outer margins slightly thumbed; mounting adhesive at the corners. Ink remains dark and legible Pigments in the historicated intitial well-preserved. Overall very good for a working leaf fro a 13th-century portable bible.
