Mine are walls: they are my inner map. Any wall interests me for its intrinsic quality: be it traces, different materials, lettering, advertising, people's idiosyncrasies, decoration, destruction. I always know where the walls are, or where they stood whenever they have been destroyed or painted over. The early publicity was gigantic in scale and gave color to the streets; the inscriptions made dull facades come alive. The walls in the book are all houses' walls-not enclosing walls, not separating walls, like those of prisons or the Berlin Wall. My interest lies in architecture, environment, painting, graphic design, as well as photography. Memory: I don't remember Berlin from my childhood. I left it at the age of two, during the war, and grew up in the country. But my favorite pastime was drawing "cuts" of houses with the life going on inside exposed. Maybe I did remember. First picture of a wall: 1962. While a student at the Hochschule fur Bildende Künste and painting in Berlin, I was watching a friend in the darkroom, and the growth of a photographic print out of nothing fascinated me so much that I decided then and there to start photography. … (VII) ISBN 050027102X

188363180
steel engraving. RARE view from 'Album pittoresque d'un voyage autour du monde exécuté par ordre du gouvernement français…' Picturesque Album of a Voyage Around the World Executed by Order of the French Government. Gravures dessinées par L'Amiral Paris. Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.

The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition. "Two little acts of Justice: one yto John Palmer who I am told has twice tried to enlist and was turned down for eyes but the other 'shirkers' stand; one to one: I thought and thought about my fatal phrase which did not sound quite right on the phone and yet was familiar: : what I said was 'I'd rather be cut than shot for a cause I don't believe in'- " He imagines how good it would be when the fighting is over "dividon and pain". "But I am anxious for things are not going well at Verdun the Germans may take it by instalemnts within five or six weeks and then if they burst through between Soissons and my old fear Berry au Bac . hardly anything will escape the pincers same model as use against the Russians. The one chance is that they have worn themselves out by dint of victory." An obituary states: "He served in the French army and during the war was section officer to the British Ministry of Munitions. In addition to economic works Mr. George turned out many novels which had a wide demand. " [Printed heading] Ministry of Munitions of War, Whitehill Place, SW, 4 June 1916. unknown
