1850149946Georgia: Bank of Augusta c. 1850. Rare original uncut banknote sheet from the Bank of Augusta. One sheet with three notes priced at one dollar and the last bottom note priced at two dollars. Not signed dated or marked with serial numbers. In near fine condition with creasing and a few inked fingerprints to the extremities. The Bank of Augusta chartered in 1814 was a prominent financial institution in early nineteenth-century Georgia and played a significant role in the economic development of Augusta and the surrounding region. Founded during a period of rapid commercial expansion along the Savannah River the bank facilitated trade by providing credit to merchants engaged in cotton export and inland commerce. Its operations reflected broader trends in southern banking including close ties to agricultural markets and regional trade networks. The Bank of Augusta was also notable for its distinctive architecture: its Greek Revival building completed in the late 1830s. Like many antebellum banks in the South it faced recurring challenges related to economic volatility and regulatory change and it ultimately ceased operations in the mid-nineteenth century.
