The capitalized letters in the title that are written in red ink on the final two lines add up to the date 1725. This kind of "secret coding" appeared sometimes in books of 17th and 18th century. Certainly the book and its box appear to be 18th c or earlier. The 4to Hardcover book is fully covered in rich red leather with full gilt decoration. The book measures 9 x 12 inches; 31 x 22.5 cm. Text is 1-1/4 inches thick 3 cm. All edges gilt. 292 pages of which about 40 are blank. All entires are manuscript most in black ink a few in red ink. Many pages have black block notes on music scores with lyrics. The book has an Index. The book is clearly a work in progress as there are pencil-drawn guidelines and partially completed pages after the first 250 completed pages. The book is Good Plus with light wear light rubbing slight staining but intact with no major faults no cracks no chips no tears. The binding is secure. The book is housed in a custom-made finely constructed matching hardcover box measuring 13 x 9-1/2 inches which is fully covered in leather in the shape of a book . This cover resembles a pull-apart flat hatbox. Both the book and the box have delicate hand-painted paper - as end paper on the book and as box lining - with a similar but not exactly the same floral/geometric design in matching maroon tan and purple colors. Cover on box fits very snuggly but is easy to open. All manuscipt entries are done neatly carefully and artistically. Text pages are near Fine with no foxing and almost no spots with only slight rippllng. Overall the book is in Good Plus condition and the box is VG.ks no chips. Fine. - An 11 inch high by 14 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting Leonard Bernstein seated at a desk with recording equipment to his right a cigarette pensively held up near his mouth. The great violinist Isaac Stern seated next to him reaches towards the score while the classical music producer and clarinetist David Oppenheim stands at left smoking a pipe. The three together with a partially visible fourth man appear to be attentively listening to the playback. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara during a studio recording session with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Identified by him on the verso as "Leonard Bernstein & Isaac Stern / CBS Recording Session Spring 1956" the photograph is signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. The Koussevitzky Foundation commissioned Leonard Bernstein to compose "The Serenade after Plato's Symposium" in memory of Serge and Natalie Koussevitzky. Bernstein completed the work for solo violin strings and percussion on August 7 1954 and premiered the work in Venice with violinist Isaac Stern and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on September 12th of that year. Bernstein & Stern subsequently recorded "The Serenade" for Columbia Records with the Symphony of the Air on April 19 1956. The American clarinetist David Jerome Oppenheim 1922-2007 was also a classical music and television producer directing the Masterworks division of Columbia Records from 1950 to 1959.Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. Born in Vienna Austria in 1901 Gara established lifelong careers as a portrait photographer and professional cellist. Before the outbreak of the Second World War he and his wife emigrated to the United States where he was hired as cellist for the NBC Orchestra led by Arturo Toscanini. He performed with the orchestra later called The Symphony of the Air until his death.From his seat in the front row of the orchestra Gara was in the unique position to photograph all the great conductors and soloists who appeared with the orchestra during this extraordinary period of musical activity. His subjects were captured in performance rehearsal and in candid moments during recordings and while socializing.Gara's action portraits were used for record covers for the Book of the Month Club and in articles in Time Life and other major magazines around the world. Three minute dents to front board a hint of wear to bands and corners isolated faint foxing blank recto of frontispiece leaf and blank verso of final leaf with faint blue shadown from endpapers but all of these quite trivial and otherwise A BEAUTIFUL COPY--fresh clean and bright internally with very wide margins and strong impressions of the plates and in a lustrous binding showing with few signs of use. This is surely one of the handsomest poetical treatises on music ever produced and it is offered here in a binding done by one of the finest craftsmen working in Europe during the period of the book's publication. The work is written in the "silva" form of poetry used by persons of high rank illustrated with fine engravings and put into elegant morocco by the finest hands among the large Derome family of binders. According to Palau our first edition is "beautiful and printed on fine paper." He says further that although the strongly expressed opinions of the youthful author on contemporary composers caused the work to be "unfairly attacked" it was "appreciated by professors of music and collectors of literature in that genre" especially in Italy and America. A child of the Enlightenment Iriate 1750-91 gained entry to intellectual and artistic circles in Madrid through his uncle who was librarian to the king of Spain. He translated works by Horace and Virgil into Spanish by royal request and wrote criticism poetry and dramas. He is best known for his satirical fables on the contemporary literary scene "Fábulas literarias." There were no fewer than 18 members of the Derome family who made their livings as binders in Paris from the middle of the 17th century until the first quarter of the 19th but by far the most distinguished family member was Nicolas-Denis called "le jeune" 1731-88. Known for the gracefulness of his bindings and for being capable of "amazing delicacy" in Hobson's words Derome le jeune was simply the leading binder of the day and his work was much in demand. Because he refused to turn away customers Derome was forced to hire a number of assistants whose work he could not always supervise closely. However Thoinan says that the binder's best work is indicated by the presence of his ticket as here. The volume's provenance adds to its luster: it was in the distinguished library of American bibliophile Mortimer Schiff 1877-1931. In Dickinson's words Schiff a financier and philanthropist Schiff "brought together an unrivaled collection of decorative bindings." His library included works by great printers important illustrated books and works printed on vellum but chiefly fine and historic bindings. The "Reliures" database of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France commends Schiff for assembling "one of the most important inter-war libraries" noting that his collection was "renowned for its collection of French bindings.". Fine. - A powerful 14 inch high by 11 inch wide photograph by Emmerich Gara depicting the Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Chavez conducting from a crude podium set up in front of scaffolding. Depicted in three quarter profile from the hip up Chavez leans forth with furrowed brow while conducting with his hands. Attired in a white sweater tucked into his pants with a colorful scarf tucked into his sweater the conductor is posed in front of the white tarps punctuated with colorful lines which drape the background. Scaffolding rises up from behind Chavez at right of the image. Photographed by Cellist Emmerich Gara with his name & address stamped on the verso of the photograph. Signed by Gara in pencil on the verso. Fine. The Mexican composer and conductor Carlos Antonis de Padua Chavez y Ramirez 1899-1978 was a music theorist educator as well as a journalist. He founded the Mexican Symphony Orchestra and was also its director. Influenced by Mexican culture his second symphony the highly popular "Sinfonia India" uses native Yaqui percussion instruments. He conducted the Symphony of the Air at the Empire State Music Festival held in Ellenville New York in July 1956.Emmerich Gara b.1901 d.1963. The corners and edges of the pages are slightly creased. Very good. Laid in at the back is the 4-page "Violin" part also printed on folio pages. The bottom edges of these pages are dampstained. In addition to the violin part there is also laid in an original subscription form printed on a 10-3/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide sheet.First edition of the fourth issue of Henry Cowell's important periodical. Through "New Music" Cowell an important composer himself published scores by modern composers who would otherwise have little opportunity to see their works distributed through the mainstream."This issue contains Sonatina for Violin and Piano by Carlos Chavez". The work was composed in 1924 by the pianist and composer Chavez as he toured Mexico with the violinist Silvestro Revueltas who was also himself a composer. Music critic James Reel describes the work thus: "The term 'sonatina' implies small scale and simplicity but this work is fiendishly difficult and at times harmonically harsh. It begins at a measured pace almost suggesting a Baroque adagio but the mood is tense and sour. The next movement is a jittery piece inspired by Mexican folk music although there's a note of panic in this fiesta. There follows a concluding slow movement in which the violin plays a long-lined though rather acidic melody over a restless piano accompaniment." Reel compares the work to some of Prokofiev's chamber music though not quite coming up to that same standard nor to Chavez's own later works he concludes that "Still the Sonatina is a compact expressive work that hardly deserves its neglect."The Mexican composer conductor music theorist Carlos Chavez Carlos Antonio de Padua Chavez y Ramirez 1899-1978 was the founder and director of the Mexican Symphonic Orchestra. Chavez' work was influenced by native Mexican cultures as exemplified by his most popular work "Sinfonia India" which uses Yaqui percussion instruments. Not only was Chavez a composer he was also a journalist who founded the cultural journal "Gladios" with friends in 1916 and later joined the staff of Mexico City's "El Universal" in 1924 contributing over 500 articles to the paper. Through "New Music" Cowell an important composer himself published scores by modern composers who would otherwise have little opportunity to see their works distributed through the mainstream.This issue contains "The Corpse for Voice and Piano by Leo Ornstein" and "Six Pieces for Solo Voice by Imre Weisshaus".A leading American experimental composer and pianist of the early twentieth century Leo Ornstein 1895-2002 performed works by avant-garde composers as well as his own innovative and shocking compositions. He was a cause celebre in both Europe and the Americas. Ornstein made extensive use of the tone cluster and was recognized as the first significant composer to do so. Born in Kremenchug in Southwest Russia Ornstein studied in Petrograd before moving to the lower East side of New York City. Quoting from the brief biography printed at the end of the score: "His first works are extremely conventional in mode but as early as 1913 when modern music was quite rare he broke with great suddenness into a highly dissonant and individual style."The Hungarian-French pianist composer and ethnomusicologist Imre Weisshaus 1905-1987 later composed under the pseudonym of Paul Arma. Quoting from the biography printed following the score: "From 1921-1924 he was a pupil of Bela Bartok in the Budapest Academy of Music. As well as being a composer Mr. Weisshaus is a pianist and tours constantly to spread a knowledge of modern Hungarian works. Outside of the 'Six Pieces for Solo Voice' none of Mr. Weisshaus' works is published. His unpublished compositions include the following: Pieces for Large Orchestra 1926; Two 'Recitatives' for Violin Solo 1925; Pieces for the Piano 1925-1927; 'Skizzen' for the Piano 1926-1927; Sonate for the Piano 1927 etc." Weisshaus left Hungary in 1930 settling in Paris in 1933 at which time he likely took on the pseudonym of Paul Arma.Weisshaus' "Six Pieces for Solo Voice" are wordless.
