The exact date of the composition of Opus 48 six songs for voice and piano has not been definitely established but the last was finished no later than March of 1802 and it appears that sketches of No. 3 survive from 1798. <br/><br/>These songs use texts by Christian Fürtegott Gellert and they relate to views of God and the divine presence as it relates to life death nature and man's love of his neighbor. The songs stand alone and are considered less as a cycle and more as a series of loosely-connected songs. <br/><br/>Unusual and a striking survival of a beautiful piece of music. Unfortunately this tiny book is lacking its covers the front endpaper and the internal six leaves of the first signature being the title page and portraits of the Duke of Wellington and the Duchess of Kent with the accompanying poems of tribute. Included are portraits of Thomas Lawrence Beethoven Lady Blessington and singer Judith Pasta a calendar for 1839 the birth dates of the royal family lists of the sovereigns of Europe the Queen's ministers and ladies of the court. This is one of a series of almanacs published by Schloss between 1836 and 1843. Bondy says of the Schloss's Almanacs: They are true miracles of engraving illustration binding and presentation. Finely bound in three-quarter red morocco over light red marbled paper-covered boards five raised bands to spine lettered and stamped in gilt top edge gilt light red marbled endpapers. A very good set light toning and spotting to spines and some rubbing to extremities. Overall a beautiful set. Beethoven a German composer is recognized as one of the major driving forces of Romanticism in music and completed much of his work during the time of transition between the Classical and Romantic eras. After finding success as a composer and conductor Beethoven lost most of his hearing at only 44 years old but continued to compose. Today his works are some of the most widely performed amongst classical musicians.
