Full-page color offset prints. Original cloth; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION inscribed by Lewitt on the front free endpaper in pencil to "Ann." Uncommon in the cloth-bound issue and especially so when signed. Lewitt conceptually explores: "Circle Square Triangle Rectangle Trapezoid and Parallelogram in Red Yellow and Blue on Red Yellow and Blue." The book is divided into three sections each of which differ by background color. Barbara M. Reise wrote that "LeWitt's colours like his lines and squares are like 'facts': they are inert pre-established accepted and un-emotional man-made constructs which can 'come to life' within a present context but do not necessarily do so. Red yellow blue and black and the white of wall or paper are standard "absolute primaries basic to all pigment colour - that is according to the colour system accepted by an art academic from early 19th-century theorists like Chevreul. Unlike the Newtonian rainbow-spectrum based on light-waves this theoretical structure is more conceptually mathematical and tautological than referential to some exterior and inhuman Nature. LeWitt's use of these colours is as flatly complete physical and self-reflective as the theory itself. Unlike Seurat whose use of the same colour theories was subordinated and interrelated to other interests in proportion theories and seen scene subject-matter LeWitt uses colour as both the subject and the object of his art" in: 'Sol Lewitt Critical Texts' ed. Janssen's memoir: pp. 414-426.

First appearance of this milestone paper in chemistry physics and astronomy announcing the discovery of the helium lines in the spectrum of the sun. It was Lockyer in the same year that named it 'helium' for Helios the Greek God of the Sun. Helium was not discovered on the earth before 1895 by William Ramsay and it was Crookes who established its identity with the helium Janssen and Lockyer observed in the spectrum of the sun."He Janssen met immortality by travelling to India in 1868 to study the total eclipse. It was then that he observed the helium line and forwarded the spectral data to ockyer. He also noted the size of the solar prominences. The day after the eclipse he attempted to take their spectra again and succeeded despite the absence of the obscuring moon. he then announced jubilantly that it was the day after the eclipse that was the real eclipse day for him. Lockyer also reported this method of studying prominences without an eclipse.Like Lockyer he lived to see his observation of the helium line vindicated by Ramsay's discovery of that element on earth."Asimov."This the discovery of helium lines in the sun by Lockyer was announced on the same day by the French astronomer Janssen who was in India observing a total eclipse. As a result the French government some ten years later struck a medallion showing the heads of both scientists.By that time the two men had made a much more dramatic discovery at the same time this time in cooperation. Janssen studying the spectrum ofthe sun during the eclipse had noted a fine line he did not recognize. he send a report on this to Lockyer an acknowledges expert on solar spectra. Lockyer compared the reported position of the line with lines of known elements concluding that it must belong to a yeat unknown element possibly not even existing on the earth. He named the element from the Greek word for the sun."Asimov.Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1868 A. - The volume contains other notable papers by Dumas Berthelot et al. hardcover

New York City NY: Multiples Inc./Lois And Michael Torf New York 1980. Softcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 116 pages. Collection of photographs presented as an Artist Book. One of the most original and influential photobooks of the 20th century. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Sol LeWitt: Oversize-volume format. White softcovers as issued. Photographs by Sol LeWitt. There is very minimal text. Printed on pristine-white thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine as issued. Presents Sol LeWitt's "Autobiography 1980". His pictorial autobiography circa 1980 rigorously and originally restricted to his physical material space whose specific objects nevertheless refer to both his inner life private thoughts feelings sensations and mental life as a Conceptual artist of the first rank. "Shows LeWitt's work space tools cabinets for storage furniture books appliances clocks records and tapes pieces of art and family photographs. Each of the nine photographs on every page is arranged in a grid format. Every reference is the same size with no object in his space more important than another" Publisher's blurb. "The artist catalogues every corner crevice and item in his loft: The bare facts of his everyday existence. We investigate each image but the significance of this Autobiography derives from the connection between images on a page on a spread and from page to page. Presents the life of the artist as the life of a particular person in a particular culture at a particular time and place. An unparalleled work. Singular in its demonstration that LeWitt's abstract geometric forms are inextricable from the experience of his life and culture" Adam Weinberg. An absolute "must-have" title for Sol LeWitt collectors. This copy is very prominently neatly and beautifully signed placed and dated in black ink-pen on the front free endpaper by Sol LeWitt. It is signed directly on the page itself not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. This title is a pioneering and great photobook. This is one of very few such signed placed and dated copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and despite its imperfection toning and wear on DJ spine is still in fine condition overall: Every single internal page is clean crisp and bright. It is NOT price-clipped. It has NO bumps or markings. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 116 plates encompassing 1116 images. One of the most brilliant artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0960557806.
