Half dark blue morocco and decorated boards gilt extra with geometric rules and angular diagonal panels reaching from the foretips into the approximate center of the boards and with a small white morocco rabbit inlaid into the upper side-panel of the spine t.e.g. While the binding is unsigned it is characteristic of Bennett Studios. Light rubbing at tips else a fine copy enclosed in a matching morocco faced board slipcase with repaired splits at joints and some chipping to the extremities. First edition in this format. Illustrated with six original color lithographs signed in the plate by Marie Laurencin printed by Desjobert of Paris. From a total edition of 790 copies this is one of fifty copies on Japan vellum of 420 for distribution in the United States. The famous Laurencin lithographs benefit significantly from their appearance on Japan vellum in this uncommon issue which does not suffer from the foxing that frequently defaces the copies on paper. The binding is similar to that appearing on a small but observable number of copies of the US issue executed by Bennett perhaps at the instigation of the US distributor. MINKOFF A39. MONOD 2304. His presence asserts itself with force because it is entirely active there in the book itself."
A near fine copy enhanced by a classic "Lines in Four Directions" drawing executed and signed by LeWitt for the recipient; faint sunning to the edges of the dust-jacket and very minor wear to the corners. 19305130Lovedale South Africa: Lovedale Press. 1930 1930. First edition. 8vo. 185x120mm. pp. 12 225 1bl. Green cloth lettered in gilt to upper cover and spine. Original illustrated dustjacked chipped and a little torn along top and bottom edges but overall very good and rare in any condition. Internally there is some foxing. An excellent copy in the scarce dustjacket of an important work of African fiction and one of the earliest attempts by an African writer to give an account of pre-colonial Africa and the first novel in English by a black South African. Sol Plaatje 1876-1932 took his name from the Boer family who employed his family on their farm. A brilliant student Plaatje mastered seven languages including Dutch and English which gave him the right to vote although this would be taken away when the new Union of South Africa was created. Throughout his life Plaatje was a leading figure in the struggle for black liberation and was a founder member and first General Secretary of what would become the ANC. Plaatje wrote Mhudi in 1919 although it would take him eleven years to get it published. During this long gestation the book was revised and altered some critics suggesting that it went through a process of censorship and bowdlerization. Whether or not that is so is a matter of scholarly dispute but what is not in doubt is that this novel now firmly established in the African canon represents a brave and early attempt to preserve and regenerate native South African tradition in the face of colonialism. Lovedale, South Africa: Lovedale Press. [1930] hardcover
CNAP067San Francisco: The Arion Press 2003. Limited Edition. Hardcover. New. LeWitt Sol. Square 10 7/8" by 10" 128 unnumbered pages. The type is 24-point Deepdene handset with smaller sizes in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris for subsidiary matter. The drawings were scanned to make negatives for photopolymer plates. The paper is Pescia a mould-made sheet from the Magnani mill in Italy. The binding done in-house is hand-sewn in full gray cloth printed by letterpress with a design that is an enlarged reference to elements in the artist's drawings and titled on the front back and spine. The volume is enclosed in a darker gray cloth slipcase that features the same front and spine titling as on the book. The volume is signed by both the poet and the artist. This was the first of two volumes of Heaney's poetry published by Arion Press the second being "Stone From Delphi" 2012. Seamus Heaney 1939-2013 was lecturing at the University of California Berkeley in 1999. Through Helen Vendler we invited him to come to San Francisco to visit Arion Press and have lunch with us on South Park. On February 9 he arrived bearing a present a copy of the manuscript of a translation he had just made of a Pushkin poem about the legendary poet Arion who in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" is saved from the sea by a dolphin. We printed the poem as a keepsake for Arion subscribers in 2002.

Hoyem proposed to Heaney that Arion Press publish a deluxe limited edition of his forthcoming translation of "Beowulf" with facing Old English. His publishers Faber & Faber and Farrar Straus & Giroux had intended to use only the translation. Heaney took the idea back to his publishers and they agreed to add the Old English text which obviated the rationale for the limited edition.

Vendler prevailed upon Heaney to allow us to instead produce a limited edition of his most important series of poems "Squarings". Hoyem approached Sol LeWitt 1928-2007 to do four prints for the four sections of twelve poems each. Instead the artist offered to do forty-eight drawings one for each of the poems as squares with underlying patterns and overlying scribbles.

Please note that this copy is marked as "Display I" but is still in as-new condition.

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
