In 4°; (70) pp., ultime 10 carte bianche. Manoscritto redatto in chiara grafia ottocentesca, dedicato ai tessuti diafani detti “garze”. L'opera è illustrata da numerosi disegni ed inserti di tessuti coevi. Legatura in mezza-tela coeva con piatti marmorizzati. Seppur anonima, l'opera è probabilmente collegabile all'insegnamento di Luigi Bossi, prima della pubblicazione della sua monumentale opera dedicata all'arte delle delle stoffe che Bossi stampò nel 1874. La mano che scrive è probabilmente dello studente di Bossi, Biraghi Carlo. Fra i titoli conservati nei capitoli: Garza dritta e ritorta; Garza giro inglese; Garza Zaffiro; Garza Barrege; Garza armure a bande; Garza damascata tre fili; garza diafana; Garza liseree; Garza bricole riche. Esemplare a quaderni sciolti ma in ottime condizioni di conservazione e con diversi tessuti, applicati ed intercalati, come esempio, nel testo. L'opera raccoglie, probabilmente, alcune lezioni del professore Luigi Bossi dedicato alla teoria e fabbricazione dei tessuti diafani detti garze. Il noto professore di tessitura serica ed ingegnere Luigi Bossi, autore di uno dei più celebri manuali sulla tessitura della seconda metà dell'ottocento (edito nel 1874), fu anche colui che costruì ed attivò la macchina a vapore con una potenza di 2 cavalli che riscaldò e mosse i 60 aspi, a partire dal 1846, della Filanda del Rag. Andrea Bossi. Luigi Bossi mise le sue conoscenze al servizio della tessitura e dell'industria tessile del nord Italia, divenendo figura di riferimento per le nuove generazioni di imprenditori tessili. Opera unica e curiosa.

Edizione originale e unica di questa monografia ideata e realizzata da La rinascente per illustrare la figura di Adriano Olivetti in occasione del conferimento del Gran Premio internazionale La Rinascente Compasso d'oro 1955. Impaginazione a cura di Max Huber. Nel 1954, su spinta di Ponti e Rosselli, La Rinascente istitui' il Premio per valorizzare i migliori risultati della produzione industriale. Il marchio venne disegnato da Albe Steiner, con Huber e la Lamm riferimento dell'ufficio pubblicita' dell'Azienda. In occasione della seconda edizione del 1955, viene istituito il gran premio Internazionale, vinto da Olivetti e da Breuer, cui viene dedicata un'apposita monografia, quella di Breuer a cura di Argan e questa di Olivetti curata da Labo' il quale, nel sintetizzare la storia dell'azienda, sottolinea ovunque si dia il caso, l'apporto alla cultura dell'Industrial Design (sempre impresso in neretto) dato da Adriano e dall'azienda.
Un volume in 8vo grande (14x23 cm) di (8)-1039 pagine. Alcuni articoli di giornale e documenti sullo stesso tema aggiunti all'inizio e alla fine del volume. INVIO AUTOGRAFO di Laborde “a M. Olivier” alla copertina della brossura conservata dentro il volume. Legatura coeva in mezza pelle (usure alle cerniere, qualche mancanza di carta agli angoli). Questo rapporto di Laborde sulle arti applicate all'Expo di Londra del 1851 viene considerato dagli storici il documento fondativo del design moderno. Teorico dell'unione delle arti e dell'industria, fu nominato alla testa della commissione che doveva premiare la sezione "Beaux Arts" dell'Esposizione di Londra del 1851, la prima ad unire appunto i due concetti di arte ed industria. Il frutto di quella esperienza fu riassunto in un rapporto che venne pubblicato prima sotto il titolo "De l'Union de l'Art et de l'Industrie", e poi nella collezione ufficiale di cui costituisce appunto il tomo VIII. Dopo un'introduzione storica, Laborde passa in rassegna la situazione delle arti e dell'industria nei principali paesi, per poi proporre una serie di iniziative ai poteri pubblici: educazione degli operai, scuole tecnico-artistiche, manifatture modello per sviluppare la diffusione di prodotti "di buon gusto". William Booker 1812-1881 lived with his second wife Martha and several children in Lisbon which is located west of Portland. Although Booker's name does not appear on a title page we derive his name through account settlements in the book.</p><br /> <p>Income and expenses are shown including cost of tanned leather from sheep and calf of various qualities and sizes leather making supplies nails etc. and income is derived from shoes manufacture and repair.  Intermingled with the costs of doing business Booker records in detail the costs of living in the town of Lisbon. His ledger is a veritable roadmap to the economy of the town its residents and its service businesses that he supplied and which in turn supplied his family. </p><br /> <p>Some of the larger customer accounts are Lyman Jordan of Brunswick Ebenezer Combs of Lisbon Ammi Merrill Henry I. Holland Hale Huskey Josiah Fransworth James M. Brickett Jackson Webber and Joshua Remington.  The last few pages of the book show an account for "letting of Horse" Hackett & Webber as well as a total of shoes made from "3rd March 1842"; 1 025 pairs.</p><br /> With fertile and easily cultivated soil farming was an early industry in the small town of Lisbon. Sawmills and gristmills were built using water power from the streams. Larger brick mills followed to manufacture textiles. In 1864 the Worumbo Mill was established to produce woolens and would remain a principal employer until it burned in 1987. By 1880 Booker had changed his profession to stone mason perhaps signifying the phasing out of the handmade shoe industry. unknown books
H9505Large original photo album from 1951-1954 owned by the Vice President of Dravo William Earl Clark who was General Manager of the Engineering Works Division and whose work was mainly at Neville Island. Dravo was in those days a huge engineering company responsible for ship-building and other large-scale engineering projects. They apparently worked closely or were aligned with Levinson Steel of Pittsburgh as there are a number of photos of that company's gatherings too. Over 50 photos the large majority 8x10 and captioned detailing meetings important events parties gatherings including signing of a new agreement with the unions photos of workers of some of the technology and plant interiors etc. Accompanying this is another Dravo folder with multiple copies of letters of introduction for Clark signed by the President of Dravo Carl B. Jansen and other letters from his MD and the local sherif verifying his good standing. Dravo was just coming off its best years as a major contractor for the US Navy in WWII building all kinds of ships for the war effort and was then still flush with money and contracts. unknown
