Fu soprattutto un sommo mistico, che parla all'uomo di tutti i tempi ma anche un poeta sconcertante per i suoi tempi; Giovanni visse una vita insieme contemplativa e attiva, sempre affaccendato ad aiutare i poveri del suo tempo, a guidare anime verso la perfezione cristiana, a fondare conventi, cercando l'estremo limite possibile, il luogo dove finisce il mondo e inizia, su una piana deserta e oscura, l'aurora di Dio.

Arrivato nel 1582, vi rimase per quasi trent'anni giocando un ruolo decisivo nella diffusione non solo del cristianesimo ma anche della cultura e della scienza occidentale in Cina, e nella conoscenza della cultura cinese in Europa. Il volume di Po-Chia Hsia, racconta l'intera vita di questo leggendario gesuita, seguendolo dai primi anni nella nativa Macerata e a Roma, al Portogallo, alla missione a Goa, infine all'approdo in Cina dove grazie alle sue conoscenze e al prestigio acquistato divenne consigliere della corte imperiale e fu il primo occidentale a poter entrare nella città proibita. Ricci va considerato il maggiore mediatore fra la Cina e l'Occidente. Nel 2010, quarto centenario della morte, è stata avviata la causa di beatificazione.

In occasione del cinquecentesimo anniversario di quell'evento, Scott Hendrix ci offre un penetrante ritratto non solo di Lutero, ma anche del complesso contesto storico e sociale in cui visse. In questa nuova e audace biografia, Lutero non ha né i tratti del santo senza macchia e senza paura, né quelli del fanatico religioso.
