Pages have scattered light foxing and spots of soiling to margins of some pages throughout small spot of foxing to top edge of half-title page and light stamping onto title page from illustration on facing page. Endpages have moderate to heavy foxing and soiling and tape repair to inner hinges. Text block is sunned particularly at top edge with two small spots of soiling to lower edge soiling to fore edge near lower corner and light soiling and scuffing to top edge. Boards have light soiling to edges sunning to spine and cracking to cloth at outer hinges. Soiling to center and tail of spine light to moderate bumping and rubbing to edges corners and ends of spine. Binding is sound spine is cocked. The Reilly & Lee Co unknown

Besides a writer of humorous juvenile novels the author was appointed to the Virginia State Board of Censors to make certain that movies were devoid of sex and also did not suggest any kind of racial mixing such as Oscar Michaux's films represented. In this book the family has a black maid who sees a turtle walking across the kitchen floor. She is frightened thinking it is a large bug. "I was a cleanin' up those chilluns' rooms an' I seed sumpen the like er which I ain't never seed in no hotel room.". The dialect while relatively accurate was used to show how the maid was pleasant but clearly knew her place--to serve her white employers. Bound in red pictorial cloth lettered and decorated in black spine lettering black light wear and fading to head previous owner's name and address both inner hinges cracked through endpapers apparently reglued and holding well in unclipped pictorial dust jacket lettered and decorated in red black and tan spine faded wear along the edges and corners with chipping to head and a few other small chips. Sampson wrote ten novels usually incorporating Calhoun's "Miss Minerva" in the titles creating one of the few series of novels for children which used Southern characters and settings. Sampson wrote a series of Miss Minerva novels for children in which Miss Minerva and many of the other Tennessee-based characters were African Americans. Speed the white author of this cook book written in the African America dialect spoken by Speed's Miss Minerva character say the following in part about her own cooking: "Cooking is never a task to me. I really like to do it -- that is if someone else washes the pots and pans . Incidentally I have an excellent cook who never wants me to cook anything myself."
