ril. Alla fine del Seicento ormai Steffani era una personalità di spicco nell'Europa barocca, sia come compositore, sia come diplomatico. Ne rende conto Francesco Trevisan in un "Elogio" del primo Ottocento qui riprodotto. Vista la sua autorevolezza, Steffani venne chiamato in causa da un misterioso marchese A.G. che lo coinvolse per dar credito alle "proposizioni" espresse da lui: nasce così la dotta dissertazione "Quanta certezza abbia da' suoi principii la musica", stampata ad Amsterdam nel 1695, che riscosse immediatamente un notevole successo. È un vivace spaccato della cultura enciclopedica di Steffani che unisce il sapere dell'alto prelato a quello più disinvolto dell'uomo di corte, dalle sacre scritture ai padri e ai dottori della chiesa, dalla filosofia alla medicina, dall'astronomia alla geometria fino alla storia antica.
