17853784Founding of Harvard Medical School

The Boston Magazine was published from October 1783 to December 1786 and was the first magazine to be published in Boston in the aftermath of the American Revolution. A major attraction of this issue is the presence of the front and rear printed wrappers although they are frayed and detached. The front wrapper features a large woodcut of the State House and surrounding buildings in Boston. The first 3 1/2 pages of the Magazine are Harvard's announcement from September 1783 of the creation of "the Medical Institution" now known as Harvard Medical School. This is followed by about two pages of an address "to the students in physic" i.e. the medical students reflecting upon the first two years of the medical school and outlining the requirements for a medical degree. About two pages are devoted to the sailing directions into and out of Plymouth Harbour. A brief news item in the "Monthly Chronology" reports a meeting to be held in October in Falmouth in the District of Maine on creating a "separate government" for the eastern counties -- a very early report on a separation that would not happen for another 35 years. Issues of The Boston Magazine in the original wrappers are extremely uncommon.References: Mott A History of American Magazines 1741-1850: Vol. I p. 28. First edition printed in Frankfurt in 1594 under the title Practica Medicina. Capivaccios lectures were posthumously edited by Johann Hartmann Beyer. This is the first Venice edition of these lectures on the healing sciences by one of the leading Italian medical practitioners of his time is edited by Giovanni Bernardo Sessa. Capivaccio died at Padua in 1589 where he had taught at the university for 27 years. He was a specialist in venereal diseases for which he had developed certain successful cures guarding his secrets jealously from colleagues. Capivaccio applied a philosophical approach to his practica so much so that it is doubtful if it was ever much used as a vade mecum. By writing at such great lengths it is clear Capivaccio wished to educate students rather than give them a handbook. Apart from the wish to restore Galenic teachings and to educate students one motive for Capivaccios practica may have been to bolster the claims of university doctors over the central providers of medical expertise in the Renaissance namely priests wise-women magicians herbalists and travelling empirics. This work important to the reform of the practice of medicine and to the wider concept of dogmatism or rationalism in medicine the Renaissance physician could use Capivaccios work to locate the causes of diseases as well as its signs. 19503467Nashville 1950. Very good. Two yearbooks: 244; 208pp. The first bound in blue textured cloth the second in maroon textured cloth each front cover stamped in gilt with a mounted photograph. Some scuffing to edges. Light thumb-soiling to texts previous owner's inscription in each volume. A pair of yearbooks once belonging to Dr. James L. Hutchinson of Shreveport Louisiana while a medical student at Meharry Medical College in Nashville in the mid-20th century. The yearbooks - the Meharrian for 1949 and 1950 - cover Hutchinson's last two years at the school and are chock full of photographs and information on the administration faculty students student organizations and campus life at the pioneering college. The last sections in each yearbook are comprised of advertisements from local vendors mostly medical suppliers. Meharry Medical College opened in 1876 as the first institution in the South designed to train African American doctors. At the time Hutchinson attended the school Meharry also trained dentists nurses dental technicians and medical technologists all of whom are represented in the yearbooks.

Meharry remains the largest private HBCU dedicated to training healthcare professionals. Dr. James L. Hutchinson established a medical practice in San Mateo California in the 1950s becoming one of the very first African American doctors to work in the Golden State. In addition to his family practice Dr. Hutchinson was one of the founding doctors of both Planned Parenthood and Project 90. Amazingly he is still practicing medicine today in his early 90s. Editions of the Meharrian from any year are rather rare. OCLC records a smattering of yearbooks at about a dozen institutions. unknown

187147582Rome: Forzani et C. 1871. First Edition. Folio 33cm.; publisher's tan printed card wrappers; 18pp. Wrapper lightly soiled faint vertical creasing a few tiny chips to spine ele Very Good internally fresh and fine save the crease. Polemical attack on the state of the French university system written in March 1871 two months after the end of the disastrous for the French Franco-Prussian War. As Pasteur argues whereas in Germany universities proliferated across the country France "stymied by revolution was always occupied with the sterile search for a better form of government giving only distracted attention to her institutions of higher learning" p. 9 our translation. At the root of all this was the regime of Napoleon I who in the early years of the 19th century neglected the country's twenty-eight extant institutions of higher learning in favor of his Université de France a disastrously centralized state-run institution that he established in 1808. The University suffered greatly during the Restoration and with it the quality of education so that by 1868 only £8000 were being spent for "true academic purposes" across the country cf. W. Chandler Roberts et al "Journal of the Society for Arts Vol. 32 no. 1655 August 8 1884 p. 905 creating a lacuna of learned and innovative thinkers to match Germany's. Perhaps in order to combat this downward trend Pasteur later founded the Pasteur Institute in 1887 serving as its director until his death in 1895.

This appears to be the only separate appearance of Pasteur's tract published abroad and distributed to various foreign leading scientific figures among these "Darwin's Bulldog" Thomas Henry Huxley who makes mention of this work in an address delivered in October of that same year. The essay appeared again in print in 1947 following an even more disastrous encounter with Germany in a collection titled "Pour l'Avenir de la Science Française." This publication quite scarce with four physical copies noted in OCLC as of February 2020. COPAC adds one copy at the LEC Library UK. Forzani et C. unknown

The Kuniko press photograph documents a Japanese woman publicly identified as a professional scientific researcher underscoring the visibility of women in medical and laboratory fields across national contexts. The 1946 dissection photograph records a moment of postwar expansion in women's medical education preserving the identities of participants in a cohort entering a rapidly changing profession. Light silvering and minor edge wear to several prints; press photographs retain captions and stamps; postcards show age toning. Overall in good condition.
