First published under the title "An Account of Animal Secretion, the quality of Blood in the Humane Body and Muscular Motion", in 1708. This work was an important intermediate step between Harvey's early work on the circulation of the blood and the full understanding of circulation achieved by Hales in 1733. Buchdeckel in sehr schöner grün-rot-goldener Marmorierung (nach historischen Vorbildern) und roten Leinenecken Autobiographie des bedeutenden Physiologen und Anatomen Karl Friedrich Burbach (1776 - 1846), der insbesondere durch bedeutende wissenschaftliche Beiträge zur Neuroanatomie hervortrat. Mit Namenverzeichnis im Anhang. Burdach, von 1807 an außerordentlicher Professor in seiner Geburtsstadt Leipzig, übernahm 1811 einen Lehrstuhl für Anatomie, Physiologie und Gerichtsmedizin an der deutschsprachigen Universität Dorpat im heutigen Estland. 1814 wechselte er an die Universität Königsberg und gründete hier drei Jahre später die Königliche Anatomische Anstalt. Der von Schelling beeinflußte Burdach suchte stets einen Mittelweg zwischen reiner wissenschaftlicher Empirie, die er ablehnte, und naturphilosophischen Denkansätzen. Burdachs Autobiographie gilt als bedeutende Quelle der Wissenschafts- und im Besonderen der Medizingeschichte des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts.
