18851897London: W.H. Allen & Co. 1885. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Original brown cloth hardcover with gilt spine titles. A good-only copy. External description: corners and spine tips rounded and bumped with minor fraying at the extremities of the corners. Some bumping as well to the board edges where they extend beyond the textblock. Rubbed lightened spot to the center of the spine column and darkening ot the top of the boards and the top edge of the textblock. Interior description: Front pastedown with two erasure spots - brown papers lightened and scuffed from the erasure. Front hinge is split with paper exposing the binding web - still relatively solid. The rear hinge is starting but not as advanced as the front. Darkening to the edges of the back of the free endpapers from the dark brown endpaper coloring coming through. Some light soil at the half-title. Frontispiece plates graphs and maps intact including two large folding maps bound in at rear and an extending graph in the supplements. One of the folded maps has a long tear at the binding edge. Binding feels solid and sturdy although cupping the spine will always be recommended with a book of this size and weight. Advert for the European publisher's catalog affixed to the rear pastedown. The pages are bright and clean majorly free of the foxing that generally plagues books of this time period. Reliés en deux volumes In-4 demi basane brune un ensemble de divers journaux de l'Aveyron parus entre 1797 et 1809 se décomposant comme suit : 1° volume : Journal de l'Aveyron : Du N° II de messidor An V au N°31 de FRIMAIRE An VI, manquent les N° 3,4,5,11,13,17,21,25,26,28. Puis du N ° 1 du 16 mai 1807 au N° 33 du 21 décembre 1807 sans manque. Puis du N° 1 du 2 janvier 1808 au N° 12 du 19 mars 1808, en suivant le N° 20 du 26 mars et du N° 14 du 2 avril 1808 au N° 35 et dernier (imprimé en titre) du 27 août 1808. Quelques journaux ont été restaurés anciennement, certains présentent des manques de texte. - Relié avec : Bulletin de l'administrations et de la Société d'Agriculture du Département de l'Aveyron, du N° 1 du 3 septembre 1808 au N° 20 inclus du 14 janvier 1808 - Relié en suite "Feuille villageoise de l'Aveyron" 68 pages imprimées sur papier bleu, sans date, probablement 1808. Intervenants identifiés : Amans Rodat, propriétaire à Olemps, Cadet de Vaux. Cette dernière publication avait pour objet de diffuser les nouvelles techniques de culture et d'élevage, on y trouvait des conseils sur la santé des animaux, la gestion des forêts ou l'amélioration des récoltes. Elle s'inspirait de la célèbre "Feuille villageoise parisienne" de la Révolution mais sans être politique. 2° volume : Bulletin de l'administration et de la Société d'Agriculture du Département de l'Aveyron, du 21 janvier 1809 au 30 décembre 1809 sans manque. Les journaux contenus dans ce volume sont en très bon état. Très rare ensemble qui, même si il présente des manques, est du plus grand intérêt tant pour l'histoire aveyronnaise que pour les contributions dans le domaine agricole qu'il contient. Ce bulletin servait autant à la préfecture pour publier les arrêtès, circulaires et instructions officielles qu'à la Société d'Agriculture pour diverses communications et essais, entre autres sur les fourrages, les moutons mérinos et même la lutte contre les loups. Les reliures, certes modestes, ont préservé ce rare ensemble.

Richard Parkinson (1748-1815) an English agriculturalist, born in Doncaster, Yorkshire. He was interested in improved farming methods, and was encouraged by Sir John Sinclair, president of the Board of Agriculture, who recommended him to George Washington. He left England in 1798, and was for some time in the employ of Washington as an agriculturist at Mount Vernon, and resided at Orange Hill, near Baltimore. On his return to England, Parkinson became steward to Sir Joseph Banks in Lincolnshire. Rothamsted, p.115; Goldsmiths'-Kress no. 17262.
First edition, [6], 255, [1]pp., 4 large folding engraved plates of various different ploughs (neatly laid-down onto linen), later green cloth. James Small, agriculturist and plough maker, was born at Upsettlington in the parish of Ladykirk, Berwickshire. He served an apprenticeship with a carpenter and plough maker at Hutton, Berwickshire, and about 1758 he went to Yorkshire to work for a Mr Robertson, maker of wagons and carriages at Doncaster. He returned to Scotland in 1763 and started to experiment with ploughs to establish which worked with the least draught. He enjoyed patronage from several leaders of Scottish society. Henry Home, Lord Kames, encouraged him in the publication of his treatise. Sir John Sinclair, a leader of progressive agricultural opinion in Scotland, was another champion of Small and his work. Small did not forget his first investor, Renton, who in 1784 became the dedicatee of his "Treatise of Ploughs and Wheel-Carriages." The book made Small the first to set out the scientific principles of plough design in print, building upon and clarifying the work of previous thinkers on the subject as well as expressing his own theories.
