Brunet, IV/1195. Bibl. Agronomique, n. 1718: "Ouvrage estimé et recherché; assez rare". In-4 °, (20), 360, (60), 328pp, 3 folded tables, frontispiece, plates; good condition, vellum binding, label at the spine. Good edition of this collection, edited by Goes, of Latin authors on the subject of agronomy and land surveying. Partly already published in 1554 by André Turnèbe, it was subsequently Nicolas Rigault (Paris, 1577-1654, literary scholar and latinist, who succeeded Casaubon in the position of royal librarian) who promoted a new edition in Paris in 1614 under the title Auctores finium regundorum ... Both editions were blurred by this 1674. The treatise includes works by Latin writers such as: Siculus Flaccus, De conditionibus agrorum; Julius Frontinus, De coloniis libellus and De agrorum qualitate; Hyginus, De limitibus constituendis; Innocentius, De litteris et notis juris exponendis. The numerous engravings in the text schematically represent rural landscapes with rivers, mountains, houses, castles, woods, sources and symbols used in the plants of the Roman land registers and in the determination of rural funds. Brunet, IV / 1195. Bibl.

Third edition, large 8vo (250 x 155 mm), 6, [vii]-xi, [1], 634pp., without half-title, 13 folding copper-engraved plates, one torn and repaired with archival paper, inoffensive light tidemark along the blank top margin of some sections and a darker stain towards the rear, recent cloth-backed boards, printed label to spine, uncut. The book is divided into two parts: first, obstetrics, and secondly, the diseases to which dairy stock are liable. "This is the most superb work ever published in the English language on parturition in the cow... The work is generally well and clearly written, though here and there obscure paragraphs occur. The author was in active practice before a veterinary school existed in this country, and learned his work under his father. After practising in the country he came to London and settled in Marylebone. London in those days had to produce its own milk. Skellett would appear to have specialised in dairy practice, and after twenty-five years' experience he decided to publish his views and methods."?Smith. Smith, Veterinary Literature III, pp. 119-121.

William Ellis d. 1758 was a self-described "plain farmer" whose second book "The Practical Farmer" bound last in our volume was an immediate success going into three editions in its first year. Divided into nine chapters it covers topics that clearly were of interest to the contemporaneous audience from "increasing crops of pease and beans" to "how to keep pigeons and tame rabbits to advantage." The 14 chapters of the first work in our volume cover a great many headings. But it is slightly more focused than the second in that its various discussions feature two kinds of fields--those found in "the Chiltern" or hilly ground where soils are diverse and frequently problematic and those in "the Vale" or lowlands full of fertile black and "blewish" soils. Ellis' gift lay in his business sense: in Fussell's words he was among the first agricultural authors to try "to prove the advantages of the methods he propounds by attaching to them the golden measure of their financial profit a touchstone that reaches everybody." As a result he found himself very much in demand as a farm management "consultant" to the landed gentry travelling all over England to proffer his expertise. Always one to capitalize on an opportunity he supplemented his income by selling seeds and implements to his clients. These enterprises coupled with his steady production of literature including the first English book devoted entirely to sheep herding led him to neglect his own farm in Hertfordshire. As a result his reputation suffered in the eyes of visitors who expected to see a model of modern farming methods on his own spread but who found instead outdated equipment and general dilapidation. As Fussell indicates Ellis was criticized by more serious scholars for his inclusion of picturesque descriptions of the countryside and anecdotes about "gipsies and thieves" but ironically this inclusion constitutes one of the major attractions of his work for the modern reader. Dickson was born in 1721 at Aberlady and studied at Edinburgh University where he took the degree of M.A. He passed his life between his cherished country employments on a large farm of his father's where he lost no opportunity of gathering experience from the conversation of the neighbouring farmers and the duties of his holy office. Having early shown a great taste for agriculture he watched its processes carefully and made rapid progress in it as he always connected practice with theory. On moving to Dunse he found more real improvements in the art and also more difficulties to be surmounted than had been the case in East Lothian. Observing that English works on agriculture were ill adapted to the soil and climate of Scotland and consisted of theories rather than facts supported by experience he determined to compose a "Treatise on Agriculture" on a new plan. The first edition of this appeared in 1762 and was followed by a second in 1770. This treatise is practical and excellently adapted to the farming of Scotland its first four books treating of soils tillage and manures in general the other four of schemes of managing farms usual in Scotland at that time and suggestions for their improvement. "Probably the most important of the authors of the period". And fifty years later J.C. Loudon wrote "decidedly the best work on tillage which has appeared in the English language and was and still is held in universal esteem among the practical farmers of Scotland". New Edition. Full Leather. Good. A. Kincaid & J. Bell; T. Longman & T. Caddel Hardcover
