L'auteur est Benito Maria de Moxo, le dernier archevêque espagnol de Charcas, né à Cervera, et mort jeune, peu de temps après la révolution des colonies du Sud. Le baron de Juras Reales était son neveu, et il eut l'indélicatesse de ne point nommer son oncle en publiant cet ouvrage comme étant le sien. Dans une dédicace pompeuse, il dit avoir été prisonnier pendant 6 ans, et c'est pendant cette captivité qu'il se serait donné à l'étude et aurait rassemblé les matériaux de cette publication. Le livre est des plus intéressants pour l'histoire des indiens et des antiquités américaines. Il est divisé en 14 dissertations, accompagnées de notes, parmi lesquelles nous citerons les suivantes comme particulièrement précieuses pour les mœurs et anciennes coutumes Curieuses dissertations sur la musique indienne… sur les sacrifices humains…sur l'écriture hiéroglyphique des indiens…sur une ancienne peinture des Tarascos…sur un fait particulier à Colomb et un parallèle de la mort de lord… avec celle de Cortés… sur le nom de Fortunès donné par les anciens aux Canaries. First editions thus of this report prepared for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration under Contract E45-1-2130 following the significant pressures resulting from investigations into the chemical explosion at the 242-Z Building August 1976 as the Hanford Nuclear Reservation had seriously underestimated the risks of long-term storage of highly radioactive waste in aging underground tanks. Investigations in this report examined and discussed the geologic hydrologic heat transfer and rock-waste evaluating the feasibility of storing nuclear wastes in caverns mined out into the Columbia River basalts. Unfortunately this continues to be an issue with much of the Hanford Reservation now operating as the largest Superfund cleanup site in the country and as late as the 1990’s 20 years after this report contaminated ground water underneath the Hanford reservation was threatening not only the Columbia River but the entire watershed. Three glass slides. 3.25 x 4 in. each with black tape border around the edges of the glass printed text of Keystone View Co. and caption at margins all in excellent condition in small box. These three glass slides depict salmon fishing a cannery and the scenic Columbia River valley. The glass slide showing the first haul depicts the fishermen standing around holding large Chinook salmon that they have taken from the seiner nets laying on the beach hauled in by horse teams out of the Columbia River. The second slide is particularly fascinating as it shows Chinese-Americans cleaning de-boning scraping off the scales dressing and then preparing the salmon caught in fish wheels to be packed into cans to be shipped worldwide. Astoria canneries were one of the chief suppliers at the beginning of the 20th century and their workforce was largely composed of Chinese Japanese and even Northwest Coast Indian workers. First edition of this very scarce and nicely printed collotype photographic views of the Columbia River Gorge sold from Gifford’s studio in The Dalles OR. Gifford 1859-1936 is considered perhaps Oregon’s most famous photographer and his beautiful images included here depict Rooster Rock sternwheeler at the Dalles Latourelle Falls Cape Horn the Pillars of Hercules Multnomah Falls shot 12 years prior to the historic Benson Footbridge at Multnomah Falls constructed by Robert Lee Ringer in 1914. Other images include the Sternwheeler Regulator Warren’s Salmon Cannery Sternwheeler Bailey Gatzert approaching the Cascade Locks Fish Wheel on the Columbia the Oregon Railway & Navigation Chicago-Portland Special leaving Tunnel 2 and the Native American burial ground of Memaloose Island. Gifford first worked in Portland until 1895 then opened a studio in The Dalles and later returned to Portland in 1910 where he continued to operate both studios until about 1920.
