Elegantly bound ca. 1928 by Rivière & Son in full blue polished calf covers double-ruled in gilt the upper cover pictorially stamped in gilt with five charming figures from the text surrounding the title all within a fine gilt frame. Spine with five raised bands richly tooled in gilt in compartments with two red morocco labels lettered in gilt. Blue marbled endpapers all edges gilt. The original peach pictorial endpapers printed in black bound in at front and rear. Spine very slightly mellowed otherwise an exceptionally fine copy. Housed in a blue cloth slipcase. A most attractive and unusually well-preserved example of Now We Are Six the third volume in A. A. Milne's beloved Winnie-the-Pooh series published at the height of his literary partnership with Shepard. Issued two years after Winnie-the-Pooh 1926 the present volume continues the gentle poetic chronicles of Christopher Robin's imaginative world - poems that balance whimsy with a quiet often wistful awareness of childhood's passing. Shepard's illustrations - already inseparable from Milne's text by this date - appear here in their original black and white form capturing with remarkable economy the personalities of Pooh Piglet and their companions. The famous vignette of Christopher Robin "going on an adventure" appears on the cover in gilt lending this binding a particularly appropriate decorative coherence. The binding executed by Rivière & Son at the end of the 1920s is characteristic of their finest work of the period: crisp gilding harmonious proportions and a sensitive integration of illustrative motifs into the design. The retention of the original pictorial endpapers is an especially desirable feature preserving an important element of the book's first issue character within an elevated binding. A charming and highly desirable copy of one of the central works of 20th-century children's literature - both a cornerstone of the Milne canon and a beautifully presented example of English decorative binding at its best. A short marginal tear 3/4 inch to title slight creasing to plates opposite pp. 173 and 285 and a neatly restored outer blank margin to the plate opposite p. 313 loss minimal. Light offsetting from plates as usual and a few minor smudges. Handsomely bound in mid-twentieth-century full burgundy levant morocco by Rivière & Son stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper covers with gilt double fillet border spine richly tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments gilt board edges and turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of Harry Bradfer-Lawrence on front pastedown. An excellent copy. A lively and richly illustrated military satire My Cousin in the Army forms the companion volume to Mitford's earlier and highly successful Johnny Newcome in the Navy 1818 transferring the comic misadventures of the naïve recruit from sea to land. Cast in brisk octosyllabic verse the poem offers a vivid and often irreverent portrait of army life in the immediate aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars blending anecdote caricature and social observation in a manner closely aligned with the Regency taste for humorous narrative. The hand-colored aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank and Charles Williams - both central figures in the golden age of British caricature - provide much of the work's enduring appeal. Their plates animated and theatrical capture the follies vanities and absurdities of military life with a sharp eye and a lively palette placing the work firmly within the tradition of illustrated comic narratives popularized by contemporaries such as the Doctor Syntax series and Life in London. Mitford himself remains one of the more colorful and tragic figures of the period: a former naval officer present at major engagements of the French Revolutionary Wars later reduced by dissipation and instability to a precarious literary existence. His writing - energetic unpolished and often drawn from lived experience - retains an immediacy that lends authenticity to the comic episodes described. A pleasing copy of a work that stands among the more engaging illustrated satires of the post-Napoleonic period enhanced by an attractive Rivière binding and distinguished provenance. Oblong 4to. 11.5 x 9 in. 64 pp unpaginated. thick brittle paper stock mounted on white linen hinges neatly written title page in bold clear manuscript w/ 191 tipped-in photographs sized from 2 x 4 in. up to 6 x 8 in. many albumen most silver gelatin all annotated in manuscript below images and carefully drawn manuscript borders in ink on each page nearly all with bright strong contrast some sepia-tinted. Burgundy-coloured simulated half-calf over beige cloth beveled boards minor soiling rubbing to covers some minor chipping to corners & fore-edges of pages some darkening 1 leaf loose still a VG exemplar. This splendid Edwardian photo album documents the salmon fishing adventures and scenic excursions by the photographer through the pastoral Wye Valley just a few years before the outbreak of World War I. At the beginning of the 20th century the Wye River was considered to be one of the best rivers for salmon fishing in the United Kingdom outside of Scotland and this fishermen definitely enjoyed the beauty and catch to be found. These images capture a largely undeveloped and pastoral Symonds Yat and Wye Valley as it winds along the borders of Herfordshire Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. Bowman has included images of side-trips along the River Monnow views of mills Llandogo the Hutsham Bridge Grosmont Castle Tintern Abbey the Devil’s Chimney at the Yat Wye Valley ruin of the Llancault Church the oldest house in Monmouth winter floods at the junction of the Monnow and the Wye Rivers winter rapids and more. Also included are scenes of salmon from the Wye the rod and reels used photos of fisherman casting into the Monnow River landing a salmon and even image of fisherman holding two large salmon while braced against a roadside hedge. The salmon fishery on the Wye held up through much of the 20th century before a precipitous decline in the 1980s and 1990s however due to extensive habitat improvement work carried out by the Wye & Usk Foundation to restore spring salmon runs the run has once again climbed but not to the levels of the early 20th century. Two hundred copies manufactured and illuminated by hand by the Ediciones Vigia in its Del Estero Coleccion. In its preparation it used white cardboard acrylic paint guano cardboard white paper craff; as well as printed papers. They were too used a wooden rod cotton string and feathers natural; add small scraps of cloth for the flame of the oil lamp. Best known for the image of the bird-women Zaida's work bursts with the richness of theme and purpose from the sea-side houses to the iconography of popular gods to the pantheon of Cuban santeria to the baroque work of the cities towns full of beautiful and laborious bird men and women overflowing with feathers arrows wounds branches and colors. The first thing was the countryside with its tobacco houses the children the landscape. Then came the horses. Then came the circus and its colorful characters. Then The Bird Women. Then came the triptychs on Afro-Cuban religion. Later came the peacocks; and finally 'The Cosmic Dance of Shiva' 2010 in which the artist moved by Hindu philosophy expresses the great passion that she gives to this oriental culture.
