19605100fdLondon: G. T. Foulis & Co Ltd. 1960. First Edition First Printing. Octavo black cloth hardcover gilt letters 407 pp. Fine with bookplate; in a Near-Fine mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Dr. Higham gives in this book a general picture of the growth of British civil air transport from the slender experimental beginnings such as the Hendon-Windsor mail of 1910 through to the formation of Imperial Airways in 1934. He shows the impetus given to aircraft production by the 1914-18 war and presents a carefully analysed account of the operational and financial fortunes of each of the four companies -- Holt-Thomas’s Air Transport and Travel Company Handley Pag eTransport Daimler Airway and the Instone Airline. Each of these Companies made a brave fight against official apathy and lack of foresight and for subsidies in the struggle with foreign competition. Dr. Higham explains the need that was later felt to justify these subsidies by the formation of a monopoly Company which could undertake the expansion needed to place civil avation on a firm financial base and establish a great British Airline. So there emerges the genesis of Imperial Airways which was placed in the awkward position of being expected to be both a successful Commercial Company and the chosen instrument of Imperial Policy. Finally however Lord Reigh carried broad policy to its logical conclusion -- B.O.A.C. G. T. Foulis & Co Ltd., (1960). First Edition, First Printing. hardcover books
