1965005503256Open Space 1965. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" A great and contrasting pairing which occasioned some controversy of two classic 1960's versions of Gerard de Nerval - the published translation by Robin Blaser and a typescript translation by Robert Duncan. Their differing approaches to Nerval caused considerable controversy at the time and have remained a topic of the scholarly ever since. From the library of noted American poet Denise Levertov with her blindstamped library label to cover flap of Blaser's book which is signed by Blaser. Laid in loose as Levertov kept it is a 5-page typescript a carbon of Robert Duncan's very different translation of Gerard de Nerval's 'Chimeras' a translation which differs somewhat from that which Duncan ultimately published which expressed in poetic form his profound disagreement with Blaser. This Duncan translation likely dates from ca. April 22 1966 or before as Duncan discusses his translation and differences with Blaser on Nerval at length with Levertov in a letter of that date see 'The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov' pages 525-526 where he mentions just having sent his version off to the journal 'Audit' with an essay attacking Blaser's work published the prior year. Clark I:298. "The Abbe Robin who came as chaplain with the French troops to America tells of his observations and experiences in a series of letters beginning in Boston June 14 1781. They marched south that summer and the southern portion of his travels begins in Baltimore in September. He wrote favorably of Baltimore's fine location and rapid growth and commented upon the Acadian community there. Since there were not enough transports at Head of Elk to carry all the army to Virginia some went partway by land including Robin. He was much impressed by the plantations in Maryland and the opulence and culture of Annapolis. At the end of September he sailed from Annapolis to the James River and disembarked near Jamestown. He described Williamsburg briefly and mentioned Professor Charles Bellini of the College of William and Mary. He commented on the agriculture and commerce of Virginia the population white and black and the treatment of slaves. Some of the flora and insects interested him especially the caterpillars and spiders he chanced to see. After the surrender of the British Robin on November 6 described the battle of Yorktown the siege surrender and destruction of property writing from the camp at Yorktown. About a week later he made a lengthy comparison between Burgoyne's military tactics and problems in the campaign of 1777 and Cornwallis's in 1781 in favor of the latter. The final letter of November 15 is a review of events in the colonies leading to the Revolution with reflections on the resources and outlook of the American people" - Clark. unknown

2000131922Burbank CA: Buena Vista Pictures 2000. Archive of two scripts for the 2000 film including the shooting script with blue and pink revisions bound in and yellow revisions bound separately with the studio's production number rubber stamped randomly on the pages throughout. Copy belonging to Bruce Willis' stand-in Allen Strange with a detailed and nicely anecdotal typed letter signed providing provenance. With director Shyamalan's initials signing off on the script on the last leaf of the shooting script. <br/><br/>An interesting insight into a quiet auteur film that has become a cult favorite here evidenced as the result of some extreme editing. This early draft shows numerous differences between what Shyamalan shot and what made the finished film. Staneruck notes that "Many of the scenes that were shot which in my opinion were stunningly great were discarded after rewrites and lost in the editing . one incredible sequence that was cut shows . Bruce Willis in the shower naked.slowly overcome by emotion and breaks down crying." Staneruck also describes a very expensive shot of the train crash "which was on a 3 axis gimble with 20 stunt people falling about and dying violently. A Big Bucks scene. Gone."<br/><br/>Self wrappers. 194715058New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1947. First edition of this collection of essay regarding the influence of John Maynard Keynes. Octavo original blue cloth. Signed by Nobel Prize winning-economist Paul Samuelson who contributed an essay to this volume. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Other contributors include John Maynard Keynes Wassily Leontief Lloyd Metzler Gottfried Haberler Wassily Leontief Abba Lerner Joan Robinson Joseph A. Schumpeter and Jan Tinbergen among others. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1970. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came in part from his mentor polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics Willard Gibbs. Samuelson therefore is a successful example of interdisciplinarity and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis. Alfred A. Knopf hardcover
