10271Essen G. Bädeker 1825. Two volumes in one. 8vo 19.8 x 12.0 cm. 782 pp.; one folding lithographed plate with several geological profiles. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Paper label with the title in an old hand on the spine. Original endpapers. = One of the first geological descriptions of this southern part of Germany and adjacent countries viz. the Taunus Schwarzwald Vosges as well as the Swiss Jura and the Schwäbische Alb. Especially interesting because of the description of the petrographic formation of these mountains. Karl Carl August Ludwig Freiherr von Oeynhausen 1795-1865 the main author was a wealthy German geologist and patron who popularised the salt bath of the famous spa now named Bad Oeynhausen. In the introduction on page v the authors state "Mit dem vorliegende Werke in Verbindung steht eine geognostische Charte in 2 Blättern" which is nearly always lacking as it was published by another publishing house in Berlin. Boards a bit rubbed front flyleaf clipped erased stamp on title. The folded map reinforced otherwise a good copy. Very rare. Zittel p. 513. hardcover
Sensational vintage compilation of thirty-five 1930s lumberjack songs from the Pacific Northwest. Elmore Vincent was known as "The Northwest Shanty Boy" and the front cover art features his image superimposed over a scene of tall timber being brought down by hand, as chainsaws were but a dream at that time. 64 pages. Includes lyrics, guitar chords and piano sheet music for these songs: A Lumber Lad's Love, Ballad of the Lumberjack, Billy the River Driver, Canaday-I-O, Come With Me In My Little Canoe, Darling Janet, Down in That Lonely Valley, Drinking Song, Fair Charlotte, Grizzly Hogan, Lonesome Lumberjack, Lumberjack Memories, Moose Meat, Smart Johnny the Logger, Song of the Lumberjack, Strawberry Lane, The Death of George Phalen, The Flying Cloud, The Gambling Lumberjack and the Jim Creek Girl, The Good Old Times, The Great Fit, The Green River Girl, "The Jam at Gerry's Rock", The Lakes of Pontchartrain, Three Leaves of Shamrock, The Little Brown Bulls, The Lumberjack and the Pretty Girl, The Lumberjack's Alphabet, The Lumberjack's Bible, The Lumberjack in Town [as sung on Seattle's "Skid Road" by Syd Johnson], The Sandy Stream Song, The Stranger and the Maiden Fair, The Two Sisters, Who Feeds Us Beans, and Yodeling Lumberjack. Most songs have several verses or more. Unmarked with above-average wear. Binding intact. A rare and wonderful musical memento of the glory days of Northwest lumberjacking. Book

004228Paris. Faux Lacquer. Very Good Minus. Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d. circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest in our view is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs we note contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course the boards are also very decorative making this binder a prized promotional giveaway which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine. unknown
